Whats that traffic census thing all about?

It seems that every CG i do now (in Mobius) has some commander calling ships in and out. is this some cutting edge game dynamic that ive overlooked or a kind of anorak trainspotter thing?

I think it's to warn people entering or exiting the dock that there a ship about to leave / enter and to avoid any possible collision. For example ships like Type-9's and Clippers don't leave much room (if any) for 2 ships to pass through the mail slot at the same time.

Yeah, I noticed this at the Wolf 406 CG, a sensible advance warning when docking at a busy port and I quickly got into the habit. Kind of settles the nerves a bit when coming in with a slightly undershielded Clipper full of metal into a port full of Anacondas, Pythons and Type9s. Makes it a nasty surprise however when someone ignores you and surprises you in the slot ;)

Hey now. I only boost into Sidewinders.

'Fool' might be coming on a little strong, most people would consider it a public service.

Ah yea, I read in that other thread that "public service" is a code word for one or both of the g-words that shall not be used in this forum - you are right :D

And if you ever see a vividly yellow sidewinder - don't ram that ship. It's my ship and I'm just trying to make a living by bringing people the finest whisky and rum I can find (and sometimes beer or water purifiers).

I was doing the CG in Persephone las night in a Python fitted with a docking computer. I like the docking computer. It will wait until the mail slot Is clear. It always enters on the correct side. It will try to take evasive action if a ship gets too close and always gets me docked safely ( if a little slowly sometimes). But I had some really near misses with Anacondas boosting out and T9s crowding my tail going in. I got hit by what looked like a FDS trying to squeeze in front of me. No warnings- no apologies.
Seriously Cmdrs, it takes literally a few seconds to give a warning to other pilots. Your ship might be indestructible, not everyone elses is.
I'm grateful to those who took the time to warn other Cmdrs of their intentions. It would have been even more chaotic otherwise.
Fly safe.
Edit; word

I discovered that too recently (on Mobius too) and I think it's very nice. Same as the people just saluting you and wishing you a good trip while they leave the station as you enter.

I think it's also a good idea to turn your ship lights on as you fly up to the slit, because it does alert of your presence beforehand

I actually do that pretty much every time there's another cmdr nearby :) even flashing a few times if we cross each other in the airlock ;)

In lieu of proper traffic control it is the prudent commander who announces his position in the traffic circuit and uses his landing lights.
