The clipper by far. It can at least trade very well and does ok in combat, although the hardpoint placement is terrible so you're forced to use gimballed or turreted weapons. The dropship however, has no real purpose, it can't haul nearly as much as a clipper and it's probably worse in combat as well considering it's mobility.

The Federal Dropship is the Federation Navy's workhorse ship for tactical and special forces deployments (Such features do not exist.). This is a well armoured (NOPE) and well armed (MAYBE) ship capable of carrying large loads (NOPE). Its versatile (NOPE) nature means that it is well suited to tackling even the most hostile environment (NOPE).

Since the Alliance doesn't have a faction ship, I'm going with the Python and claiming it as their faction ship.

Without shields:
Clipper - 248 tons - 23.3 million credits. http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=303,mpU5QG5QG,2-AAAA8c8cAA8c6k,0Bk0AA07207205U05U03w03w

Federal Dropship - 164 tons - 38.2 million credits. http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=304,mpZ5QG5QG,2-AAAA8c8cAA726k,0AA08c08c07205U05U03w

So the dropship is almost twice as expensive but has 2/3rds the cargo capacity. This doesn't make sense to me, and I didn't get to enjoy progressing in the federal dropship because of it's cargo capacity being so awful.

Give it some crazy heavy armour that will take forever to shred through and it should be fine. By crazy I mean really crazy. Should have the best armour across all ships. This way keep cargo, shields and weapons the same. Maybe a small boost in shields. However if your shields drop you should still easily fly through a warzone without dying.

Just add a type 7 internal slot to the federal dropship. It's surprising the clipper has one and is half the cost as the dropship which does not have one.

problem is, knowing game devs, what they will end up doing is replacing the class 7 slot for a class 5. In truth it would make it less able to carry goods than the type 7, and much similar tot he dropsh1t, i mean dropship. Unfortunately it would really hack me off if they did.

I know it's not the topic but talking about the clipper... how do I increase my rank in the empire?
Would be nice if someone could shed some wisdom for me.

Do missions. Trade. Bounty hunt. Explore. Mine, and sell the stuff there.

Like, play the game.

But...if you want the *fastest* way, pick one system and one station and one faction therein, and do only their missions.

Tip: if you want the clipper, make sure said station sells it first.

Clipper has everything good but 2 weapon placement.

Dropship has everything bad but 2 frontal weapon, the rest can and will miss small ship at close range and bigger at long range.

Sounds legit, must be the reason they nerf the Python. Needs to be as useless as the other faction ships. Though at least you can use fixe guns with the python and dropship ;-)

The Dropship, I believe, counts as a 'liner' and so will be able to carry high value passengers when that system is added.

To really compare the two we're gonna have to wait and see how the passenger stuff is implemented and what impact it has.

But right now, the Dropship is junk and the Clipper is a good ship. Shame I won't be getting one, as I refuse to support the Empire's tyranny. ;)

Mike the dev confirmed (I hope he didn't get into any trouble) what many people guessed.
The dropship has to do with passenger (troop?) missions, and it looks poor on paper because there are no passenger missions yet.

This is why the clipper seems all round better, and is cheaper.

Have to judge how good the orca and dropship are after you can get passengers, until then their price is just out of wack with everything else.
