General / Off-Topic What's the best ISP for Elite Dangerous?

I'm getting more fibre in my diet. BT is putting Fibre To The Cabinet in Auchtermuchy. Soon I'll be able to throw away those tin cans with the string between them.

Which ISP should I go for? Which is the best value, and the best for gaming? Or does it not matter that much when you're getting a descent turn of speed down your wires?

For playing ED? Pretty much anyone who can deliver aq few Mbps. I was on a 4-6Mbps BT line until just last week when they upgraded to fibre. I'm now at 50-75 depending on whether it's tethered or wireless - brilliant but it makes not an iota of differennce imo to ED. It does mean that the rest of the household can do Netflix, BF4 or whatever though.

Check the comparison sites first. In my area BT came out about 5 quid more a month after everything is included, but I still went with them because they answer the phone within a minute or two, the HomeHub5 is actually quite a nice router that supports multiple devices easily, and it saved messing about with sales people!

The smaller ISPs usually give a better service tbh, especially if their support is UK based. They are usually a bit more expensive, but it's well worth it.

I'm using Zen at the moment and I'm actually getting a very good connection considering I'm using an old 8mbit line. I get 7.4mbit from them on it where talktalk (who we were with before, they are awful) could only manage 5 at most!

Read the small print, reviews etc before you pay anything. Also find out what kind of download caps, traffic shaping/throttling they use. Many advertise as having no download limitations, but it's a lie. Many throttle traffic during peak times and even certain ports.

PlusNet are still pretty good. My brother's with them - he switched from BT, and is well-pleased.
I've been using Sky (via copper) for several years now, and I can't fault them - rock-steady.

BT is marginally cheaper than Sky if you buy a years line rental in advance and it's probably the only one that can give you speeds "up to 76 Mb". In the end that was the no-brainer choice for me due to the speed alone. You're still talking around 40 quid a month for Infinity 2.

If you can get Virgin then use that obviously, otherwise PlusNet has some good reviews.

I'm assuming when you say that Virgin is obvious, you are talking about Virgin Cable. I can remember a while back going into a cable company's shop, Telewest I think. I asked if cable was ever coming to Auchtermuchty. The two girls behind the counter just looked at each other and burst out laughing. They were still laughing as I walked out of the shop.

The reason why Auchtermuchty and other rural places will never have half decent cable is because our wonderful, free market government, forced every city cable user to pay a premium to cover the cost of installing cable into the countryside then awarded the contract to BT.
