Newcomer / Intro What's the best way to upgrade my ship

So I want to trade my cobra mark 3 for a vulture and I'm not sure the best way it says I can swap it straight away and I get some change but my cobra mark 3 has got some good tackle on it that I would like to keep so I've tried two things I've tried selling everything on the cobra and then when I come to try and exchange it it says I've not got enough money so plan b I've tried storing everything on the cobra and again I come back and it says I've not got enough money to swap so do I just do a straight swap and if I do will the equipment I had on the cobra appear on the vulture what's the best way to trade

You can keep your Cobra. Assuming you have enough $$ for the new ship, just buy it and you will have the option of storing your Cobra as is. You can cannabolize modules later if you wish. Keep enough $$ for rebuy!

yeah but the whole point is I don't want to keep the cobra want to trade up as soon as possible then I can trade up now or wait forever till I can afford it outright which is not what I want to do what I need to do is the best way to trade up

No, if you sell the Cobra as fitted you will lose all the modules you had.

You lose 10% of the value of any ship when you sell it. However, you don't lose credits on modules if you sell them separately from the ship hull.

Strip out and store all of your modules, sell the ones you don't want, keep the ones you do, sell the hull.

Assuming you then have enough credits you can buy the Vulture and then put any modules that fit into the Vulture back in.

However, you are on thin ice with such a low balance. You may end up not being able to outfit the Vulture as you want it, and in the worst case you may not have credits for the insurance rebuy should you lose the Vulture, at which point you are back in the free Sidewinder and you've lost all the progress you have made so far.

Keep and use the Cobra until you can comfortably afford the Vulture with plenty of credits left over to outfit it then follow the steps above by selling (or storing) modules separately so you lose as little as possible.

Use a site such as Coriolis to figure out what it will cost to buy and outfit a Vulture and then make sure you have enough credits and enough left over to cover rebuys.

As stated above you loose 10% on the sale/trade-in of the Cobra so to minimise the loss sell/store all non core modules, fit the smallest E rated core modules you can fit while selling or storing the good ones already fitted if the station doesn't have the module you want just sell the module straight away rather than trying to buy a replacement you will get an E rated module the size of the slot fitted. Replace the power plant last so that you aren't blocked from buying the cheapest one because it can't power your ship.
That will minimise your losses when selling the ship but might mess up your trade in.

If you can't afford at least 3 times the purchase price of a new ship especially if trading in your old one you really can't afford the new ship as you won't be able to upgrade the modules satisfactorily. Currently your screen shows that you would only have around 4 rebuys on that Vulture even without putting better and higher insurance value modules on.

what I thought was strange is that I have got enough money to trade my cobra 'as is' for the vulture but if I strip out the cobra whether I sell the parts or store the parts it says I don't have enough money left to trade the Hull and I don't understand that at all, however it does seem like I'm going to have to just save up some more money before a trade up

Keep the Ccbra as it's a good all rounder. The Vulture is a fantastic fighter but not so good at exploring and hauling.

My advice would be to get allied with all factions in one system to start. The mission rewards increase. A T6 is a great ship for small hauls.

It won't be long before you can buy a Vulture without needing to trade in your Cobra

Don’t do it!

If you’re just scraping into a Vulture it will absolutely not be “match fit”. The Vulture struggles with power (unless you’re a very good pilot and don’t need shields ...) until running an A-grade PP and even then it really only opens up - for me - with engineering.

The Cobra is a great ship that can do pretty much anything. If you’ve not already, I’d recommend engineering it for improved stats and save up some more cash running missions before buying a Vulture but KEEPING the Cobra as well.

Probably not the answer you wanted ...

Yeah...you really don’t have enough cash for this.

As someone else mentioned, you need at least 2-3 times the purchase price.
The Vulture is a great fighting ship but it really needs A-Rated module and some decent engineering...especially G5 Dirty Thrusters!

The Vulture is a combat ship. You shouldn't buy one until you have at least 20 million, then you can outfit it like this, which is perfect for bounty farming.

There's not really any point in storing modules unless you've engineered them. When you want to sell a ship, sell all the optional modules first, then downgrade every other module (PP last), then sell the ship.

As a general rule, you should decide what you want to do, then go and outfit a ship optimally for that purpose otherwise you can find yourself in trouble. Multi-purpose ships don't really work. Never fight any ship unless you're specifically looking for a fight and have a ship optimised for it. If ever you get interdicted, always boost away and get your FSD going as soon as you can. Whatever ship you build, except one for exploration, never compromise on speed. Always go for the best PD and thrusters you can get because its speed will get you out of trouble.

Maybe if you tell us what activity you want to do and how much money you have, we can advise you on the best ship for it.

The reason is that, if you sell/trade in your old ship, all the upgraded modules you have installed are sold, too.
The new ship you buy will always only have default (that is, E-rated) modules, no matter what your old ship had.

So, before you buy a new ship you should have (as others have said) at least (!) three to four times the money to buy the hull. After you equip the new ship you should have enough money left for at least (!) three rebuys.

You have asked what the best way is to upgrade your ship:
Even if you don't like it, the best way is not to trade in your old ship.

Leave it as it is and earn more money using it. Why? Because if your new ship gets destroyed, and you can't afford the rebuy (and you wont be able to afford the rebuy with the money you have), you will have no other choice than to start with a sidewinder again. With other words: One minor mistake and you start at zero again. And since you don't have the money, you wont be able to equip the modules you need for the vulture, making the ship even weaker and more likely to be destroyed.

If you keep the old ship, even if everything else fails, you have the option to switch back to it and don't have to work your way up from the sidewinder.

Trust us old commanders - we have good reasons for this advice.
