Whats the Big Deal with Engineers Update 2.1??

...so I thought we might need a thread like this:

November 2.0 Release

December...January....February....March....April....May.........

Still tapin' my fingers.

Sure seems like a long wait for a 'crafting system' just so that we can:
A: change the color of our lazors?
B: Have more damage when my missile explodes?
C: Make some new bases planetside with static images of 'engineers'?
D: What else?
E: Advance the story line??

I wonder if most of the devs got pulled off to work on Planet Coaster?

I haven't played in awhile, although I did just get back from an exploration trip where I found 2 earth-like's. I turned in My exploration data to Halsey's CG. The final goal I had for the game was to record a first discovery of an Earth-like. :D

I like the engineers update. The crafting and missile buff should add a lot. I do wish they took the time to do a more comprehensive combat overhaul, but at this stage, any progress is good progress, as the combat system (outside of the combat flight mechanics) is probably the most glaringly obvious weakness to the game for many people.

NO, I actually think that threads like these and the likewise comments for the latest newsletters are useful...
For one, you can now finally use abundantly the ignore button, then...

...well nothing more just that.

Now, aren't the forum such a nicer place now? :D

  • Bookmarks. A "quality of life" improvement. Select system, edit name, done. Simple and effective.
  • New filter on system map for states, War, Civil War, Boom, Bust etc. Anarchy is on there too but will probably be removed. Like a lot of stuff shown, this feature is subject to change. Part of a push to make events in the galaxy map more visible.
  • Videos shown within this stream will be in ED YouTube playlist.
  • Regeneration laser video shown - it does have some restrictions, you have to be winged-up and shields on target ship have to be functional. And its green, almost Borg-ish.
  • Engineer mods aren't just for weapons.
  • Visual effects for weapons now scale according to weapon size.
  • POIs - human ones will be within the bubble more or less.
  • Natural POIs can be found. Screenshot shown of crashed vessel on planet.
  • USSs will have a revamp for 2.1 (I assume that's the ability to scan before entering one)
  • No need for Discovery Scanner in order to scan Nav beacon.
  • Nav beacon will also transmit useful info for salvage and assassination missions. More info coming on Friday.
  • Huge multi-cannon video shown. Not as rapid firing as the smaller ones but MB comments that "it will chew hulls to bits." [yesnod]
  • Huge beam video shown. When fired, it fires one of 4 big beams in rapid sequence. I. Want. It!
  • Not even 0.1% of ED galaxy discovered yet.
  • GFX improvements for ring systems (more than planned originally) and planet surfaces.
  • Enemy ships can attack you above planet surfaces. Ships travel from one base to another. Ditto with starports.
  • Security response beefed up in high security systems
  • Large AI update for 1.6/2.1 for NPCs. Dogfighting near surfaces is a lot more interesting.
  • More SRV types - keen to look into but not for 2.1.
  • Thermal shock laser video shown - literally bringing the heat to your targeted vessel.
  • Following on from Thermal shock, changes to other weapons coming, "you can fire some disabling shots" - more on this on Friday (newsletter).
  • Regeneration laser and Thermal shock - effects will stack when used by multiple ships on a target.
  • Engineers mods is something which will be expanded.
  • MB: "The Alliance are traitors to independence." [up]
  • New NPC AI can handle canyon flight on surface, depends on rank of NPC. Better at higher ranks then they were before.
  • Exploration data gained from Nav beacons can not be sold.
  • States for systems - effects will be pushed across the game - effecting traffic, market prices, missions. States are primary drivers for what factions are planning and how their reacting.
  • NPCs can use Engineers modified weapons (!).
  • New outfitting video shown. Nav improvements, bolder comparisons. All stats shown for weapons and modules with more descriptions. From dev build, subject to change.
  • Wait, was that a pulse disruptor laser shown?!?
  • Thruster upgrades incoming. For Size 2/3 thrusters ships. Enhanced performance. Small ships are fun to fly. And racing is fun. Not too expensive, price will be in the "low millions".
  • NPC AI ships will be awry of Hi-G worlds.
  • Missions - more details coming. Navy missions revamp (more a career), its coming but not for 2.1/1.6
  • Missions - successful completions will build relationship with factions and will introduce you to higher people with that faction. Your rank will be taken into account when dealing with faction representatives. So they may look up/look down on you.
  • Something very cool to be revealed in Friday's Newsletter, not even hinted at yet.

This was written on 4/21. What was the cool thing revealed in friday's newsletter?

+Rep Thanks for the link. :)

I think the Ice Mining was the Big Reveal in the 4/22 News Letter which Bitstorm has kindly provided a link to. Thanks Bits!

Yes your right, it is ridiculous that these useless Frontier devs weren't able to release 2.1 on the first of January.
I bet you and I could have done it, because we are such great game developers and we know exactly how to do it.
Adding some colors to lazors and a bit more damage to missiles. I could have done that in 10 minutes at the most.
Adding a few static images of engineers should not have taken more than an hour.
Man they could have released 2.1 at the same day as 2.0, perhaps even a week before that.

It shakes up combat, changes AI, and missions, what isn't big about 2.1?
The combat updates are welcome. I don't think it goes quite far enough (Adding in more large weapons is great, but they should be more cumbersome to use by decreasing the agility of larger ships), but it's a work in progress. If they continue making changes like this, it might be enough to pull some of us who are just waiting for changes back in.

2.1 looks to be great if you are a combat player. Miner's should be excited for ice mining too, as long as it's profitable and not just used to get weapon crafting materials. For the traders and explorers we have yet to be shown anything to be excited about. Station chatter and bookmarks are awesome but we all get those. Hopefully there are some non combat module crafts which we learn about from the beta, otherwise these engineers will be only useful for the combat crowd, like Power Play was.

I don't see the parallel, PP was for PvE traders, pirates, smugglers, and combat players, I don't see how it was combat exclusive.

Large ships are already getting disadvantaged with what we know about the patch, I don't think making them worse is going to help anyone.

Is is so hard to search the forum and *gasp* actually read some of the relevant posts before posting yet another of these uninformed "is that really all" threads?

Nothing to see here, so moving on now.

Large ships are already getting disadvantaged with what we know about the patch, I don't think making them worse is going to help anyone.

It all depends on how they go about it. Making individual changes doesn't help much of anything, which is why I think they need to do a massive balancing pass and overhaul a lot of combat in one go. For instance, large ships should be slow and have a lot of difficulty bringing fixed or gimballed weapons to bear on small targets who are focusing on staying out of firing arcs. However, those small ships using Class 1 and 2 weapons should have a huge amount of trouble penetrating the armor or overcoming the shield regeneration of a large ship.

Basically, make it so large ships like Anacondas, T9s or Corvettes can take a sustained pounding, especially from ships (or multiple ships, if C1 only) using C1 or C2 weapons. On the flip side, make C4 weapons hurt a ton, so that those in medium ships that lack the agility to stay out of the firing arcs of a large ship all the time will have to deal with high damage from those.

So:

Small ships- Medium/high speed, highly maneuverable, low damage, low health. Biggest threats are turrets or other interceptor ships. Depending on loadout, can be a threat to medium ships.
Medium ships- Medium speed, fairly maneuverable, medium health, medium damage. Depending on loadout, can be a threat to either large or small ships, but must be configured appropriately.
Large ships- Low/Medium speed, low manueverability, high damage on fixed weapons, medium damage on turrets. If configured in a turret heavy configuration, can be a threat to small ships , or medium and large ships if in a fixed, C3/4 configuration.

I don't see why we shouldn't expect the engineers to provide modules & enhancements that would benefit explorers as well as fighters. Plus, I'm kind of intrigued about the "GFX improvements for ring systems (more than planned originally) and planet surfaces." line.

Though truth be told, after almost six months in the deeps a spot of combat sounds kind of fun. I have a sweet little FDL that I haven't seen for a while and I can't wait to mount that C4 Multi Cannon on her nose!

Yes..& anodyne in the extreme! Not a fan of confronting your preconceived ideas then? The ignore button is an option or you could just stick your fingers in your ears and close your eyes while shouting 'LA LA LA - can't hear you'! hehehe
