Horizons What's the deal with discovering metals/minerals/etc

So I'm mooching around in Merope, driving round moons looking for Thargoids. I blow up rocks and the first time I pick up any metals/mineral I get a 'Universal Cartographics' pop-up telling me I discovered that mineral and a count of how many I discovered.

Cool, thinks I, so I can sell this as advanced cartographics information, what minerals are found on which planets/moons.

Except that doesn't seem to be the case? When I went to a station to restock, there was no sign of it in my Cartographics data, and my sell value for Merope was exactly the same as before I made those discoveries.

So what's the point of these Universal Cartographics popups?

I think thay tell you it's a new discover to you not to them or just imagine this for now until fd implement something more like you expected

Every time you pick up a new resource and it triggers the Universal Cartographics message, that discovery adds a bit onto your Exploration rank, but that's the only thing that signifies as far as I'm aware. The metals / minerals themselves are currently used for Synthesis at the moment, but they will be expanded upon in later releases in season 2 for crafting and further synthesis.
