What's the federal dropship for?

I was looking over federation rank stuff and dug deeper into the dropship. Good hardpoints but it looks like it turns like a rock. Seems like it has decent armor, but what is its designed purpose? Seems like it would be out-maneuvered by just about anything.

Droping things. In my case it drops unwanted mineral fragments while I'm using its excellent mining capabilities.

The bottom mounted hardpoints kinda indicated it may have been designed around plantery surface work. Back when I had one, even fully A-rated, I liked it but was never deeply impressed with it in combat. To be fair, back then we didn't have Class 3 MC's or engineers, I imagine its a bit different now.

That dropship is really really bad, it's like a container full of     . All my experience with it, has always been bad, I used it for some mining a way back, and before the Large multicannons and other new weapons came, I used it in Resource Extraction sites, it had a pretty good punch back then with all those multicannons equipped. Right now, there is no reason to use it.

And, because of the "new" large hardpoints, it have messed it up a little bit for some ships. Upgrading other ships without giving the dropship some love, sucks. Cuz thats what they did, the allowed other ships to equip better weapons. They could have given the dropship one, or two additional medium slot to compensate or a better power distributor or what ever, something.

Pros:

- Cheapest ship with a class 6 power distributor and very impressive weaponry. Plus all her guns are under or along the side, so very easy to get all her guns to bear.

- 7 optional slots with the evenly distributed cargo ship model slot sizes rather than the extremes on ships like the Asp and Clipper. Less sacrifices need to be made, basically.

- Poor pitch at half speed, but very good at full speed compared to most ships. One of the best boost turns in the game.

- Great base armor.

- Can land at outposts!

Cons:

- Very poor jump range

- Poor top speed ... just a bit less than the Python.

- Very poor shield values because of her mass.

- Fuel tank is much too small for her mass. A fuel scoop or extra fuel tank is pretty much a necessity.

The Federal Dropship is one of the most underrated ships in the game because people look to pigeonhole her into specific roles. But she is meant as a heavily armed transporter that can fit multiple roles simultaneously. Aside from exploration of course. She absolutely sucks at that, lol.

I did a bit of mining in it, it was pretty decent at it since there was room and power for everything and then some for armament.

So feds don't get their first real ship until rank 5 then... Although with all the side and bottom mounted hardpoints, perhaps there's some planetary gameplay that was envisioned that just didn't pan out? We can't target any ground stuff in our ships though so that kinda goes out the window.

That armoured bucket is the best ship in game. Medium-sized to fit all pads, enough slots for all jobs, big g hull, plenty of hard points, and more drift than Shaun White.

Correct. The Dropship will carry armed troops to the surface of atmosperic planets when patch 5.2 arrives, sometime in July of 2019.

And a cockpit coffee maker. Don't forget the best mod in the game. :D

Directly from the front I agree they look bad.

But from the sides and the bottom they look pretty cool IMO. Very angular and the fins look nice.

The only one of the three that isn't wrong, to my eye, from EVERY angle, is the FGS. FDS looks appropriate for a troop transport, but the FAS is just disproportionate and odd looking.

The cockpit positioning looks dumb on all three. Functional though.
