Newcomer / Intro What's the furthest I'll ever have to jump to reach any star?

Just trying to understand what I want from an explorer ship.

Also, you'll find the most unexplored and most interesting stars where it is the easiest to reach them: in the galactic core area, which may contain (my guesstimate) 80% of all the systems anyway. Unexplored giants, neutron stars and black holes are abound. Also, at the 'bottom/top' you can find great views of the galaxy. If you decide so, I recommend travel to Colonia first, use the interim bases to repair if needed. Then, from Colonia you are just a couple of jumps away from unexplored void.

So yeah, you can pretty much go in any ship. As a beginner explorer, I'd recommend a Type-6, or a Keelback that can fit a fighter. Both are the same chassis with big canopy so views are great and have enough internal slots to fit all the equipment you need.

I use a Anaconda with 70.02 ly range. It has everything on it I need and can reach almost any star I want to reach. With the introduction of FC's, I will be able to reach the others that my Conda cannot. I think that a ship with 40 ly's + should be OK for almost any trip you wish to take.

I never explored with a ship better than 33-36 ly jumprange, in fact most of my travels I did with 23-26. The OP might not have access to cash and engineers to build an Anaconda.

The best explorer is the ship one enjoys to fly, it can be basically any ship.

The OP never said wether they had access to cash and engineers or not to build any ship, they just asked about (what I presume) was a minimal jump range of a ship to reach most stars and I answered with what I use.

I personaly like the ASP Explorer.
Great View in VR, better handling than the Anaconda and everything on board i need for those longer trips (at the cost of jumprange of course)

Bur honestly: Fly whatever you like most. Exploring is possible in every vessel, it just may take a while longer and it´s the trip - not the destination that counts ;)

Interesting that there are stars that are indefinitely out of reach. I kinda like that. Thanks for the tips everyone.

I'm assuming that I do eventually have access to engineers (I don't even have the DLC yet). I just want to know what to work toward over time.

He never said, but this is still the newcomers subforum. :)
You can reach Beagle Point with a low-20s jumprange - that is more than enough for someone new to exploring.

As far as I am aware the longest jump range that is needed to reach one of the most distant stars which is Ishum's Reach is ~83Ly, and so it is only possible to reach it using FSD Synthesis. If you wanted to reach that system you would need a ship with a jump range of 41.5Ly. (though I have just seen your additional answer about not having Horizons, so that is a long term goal ;) )

I still think the Asp Explorer is the best Exploration ship for manoeuvrability and visibility. I spent the first 3 years of the game in my 32Ly Asp, and took it all the way around the galaxy even to Beagle Point before I decided to actually get around to engineering it.

You can visit the Anaconda Graveyard and get back alive now, it's a 220ly neutron boosted jump, before FC's there was no way back, so 220 ly.

That is very much in the how long is a piece of string category of question.

No matter what your range there will be unreachable stars even for the as yet to be released Fleet Carriers.

As it stands without doing any engineering the best 7 ships for jump range can if setup right go over 35 light years per jump that can be boosted (doubled?) by synthesizing special fuel called Jumponium or you can if careful supercharge your jump range using a Neutron Stars jets which will take you 4 times normal range, engineering can increase range a lot and there is an ancient aliens derived module that can also increase range. But some stars will still be out of reach or worse you will use one of the boosted jumps to reach the star to find that you can't get back.

Well you could get there now but would have to wait a month or so for fleet carriers to arrive in game and then rescue you.

Sorry, not thinking about it being a newcomers sub forum, I picked up the OP from the new posts tag at the top. It's all good o7.
But you are right any ship with a decent range sans engineers will be ok. As mentioned above, the AspX would be an excellent choice as well as a DBX when the OP has enough credits to do so. But ship type doesn't really matter as long as you're enjoying what you're doing. Somebody (I can't remember who at this moment) apparently got to beagle point in an unengineered sidewinder. Can't remember the details, but it's what I heard.

Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should ;)

I think Frawd was the first person to do it. You should still travel in a bit of comfort :D My first exploration ship was a Cobra Mk. III which I took out to the Pleiades on the first day of gamma with an 11Ly jump range... Once I got back I traded for a while to get enough credits to buy an Asp Explorer and fit it out. That was in February 3301, and it's been my ship ever since.

I think that the most important thing is that you enjoy flying the ship, in terms of both the view out but also literally how it flies. My favourite is my Asp Scout. It's a good deal cheaper than the Asp Explorer, and I find it more manoeuvrable/chuckable, which I love. Also love the rear view, although I appreciate that it isn't any help when flying it.

I have done trips of several hundred jumps in mine and love it. Without engineering or Guardian tech you can get very good jump range from it (can't remember but it was well in the thirties) and then if you do get into engineering (or Guardian tech) you can push it towards 70ly and still have space to take some stuff with you. All I want is an SRV and decent scanners. I have made lots of changes to my Asp Scout and love it dearly, it does all I want it to. So really, just find a ship you can get to over 30ly and doesn't cost a bundle and head out. I never found my jump range limiting when it was in the thirties. I added distance just to speed up long trips if I ever needed to hustle.

(I just made Colonia in a 38ly Cutter, so really anything can make long journeys, these days!)

Get a ship you like and enjoy it.

My Phantom does 66.6lys so, if I FSD boost using the highest grade mats that, according the synth panel, add a 50% boost, shouldn't that give me a ~100ly jump?

I've never used a jump boost so I'm probablt way off :D
