What's the plan on all those DDA features?

As we inch ever closer towards release, the list of features as described in the Design Discussion Archive still has yet to find its way into the game. Now, it's probably not meant as a feature list, but the in-depth discussion on those boards has me wondering: Where is it? Has FD been plowing through phases to reach a Christmas release date, and adding those features later? Or are they just dreams of what might or could be added?

They've warned in newsletter #49 that some features wouldn't make it, and there's still more stuff left for release, but we don't know which features are in and which features will only be done later, and eventually which features are completely dropped.

Seems they had to meet the Christmas date and thus had to release it a tad early, but at least development isn't over.

Well I suppose that's encouraging. Still, it's a bummer to see the grand plans in the DDA be conspicuously absent from the game this close to release.

Well, I think we can at least forget about Hyperspace Discovery. If it's not there on release (and it won't be since we're in features freeze) there are only two ways to make it happen after:

1) FD puts back a bubble around all the populated systems, only to pop it once the hyperspace discovery is in, that means no full galaxy on release which is pretty bad
2) Without 1), hyperspace discovery would require a reset of the locations of all those that went a bit too deep in space, or maybe even a wipe, this is also pretty bad

So I guess this feature will probably be scrapped (Exploration could just be removed at that point).

Nope we'll get it; there will just be a wipe....Ok. by me.

You can't wipe after launch for a content release. They would be suicide. Roll backs after an exploit discovered in a patch is one thing since those are usually just 1 or 2 days of progress. But a major content update could mean a few months worth of progress accumulated.

It could be possible, assuming no technical limitations, to once the system is in place, seed the dark systems, then release the scanner as "new tech" in game.

Not a chance a company will wipe all its players progress after launch. Impossible.
Arkantes is correct, Hyperspace Discovery is one of the DDA features that literally cannot be added after launch unless Frontier artifically restricts our expansion.

The only way I could see them doing it is by adding it in an expansion that has a wormhole to the other side of the galaxy, or a totally new galaxy where the players cannot possibly have expanded to yet.

seed the dark systems.

Yes, they could do it with dark systems. Since right now the FSD needs a mass to lock on to (a star, which is why you come out of frameshift right next to it) they could implement the hyperspace discovery with dark systems (ones with no star).

Am I wrong to treat the DDA like a feature list? The majority of input in those threads is very good and in-depth, and FD really haven't said anything to dissuade us from seeing those forums like a list of promised/upcoming features.

They also stated nowhere that this are promised features. Since Frontier refuses to communicate in any way about this topic its hard to say.

This irks the hell out of me. They went through this long process of getting ideas from backers, and now they say nothing about it. Why? Did the reach exceed the grasp?

I'm really worried that the lack of DDA features (especially exploration) might make it impossible to actually "blaze your own trail" - to play the game the way YOU want.

I'm worried about this too. For the longest time I wanted to be a master smuggler, with a list of contacts and my own network of trade routes, and it's looking more and more like that's not going to happen.
