Elite / Frontier What's the point of a large plasma acclerator? (and other things)

The small version blasts everything away within one-two seconds.

Was the big version added just as a gimmick?

The FE2 manual mentions that large plasma acclerators were used to level cities on planets..:

http://www.lemonamiga.com/?mainurl=http://www.lemonamiga.com/games/docs.php?id=679

"The large version has
been known to be used as a planetary assault weapon, destroying selected
areas of cities from orbit. This has a devastating effect on the local
population, because the terrifying noise of the beam cutting through the
atmosphere can be heard for hundreds of kilometres, and will deafen anyone
unprotected in the vicinity."

was it originaly planned to add this feature (planet bombing) into the game, and that's why there are large plasma acclerators in the game? Otherwise, they are completely useless.

Judging by the FE2 manual, it seems quite a few features were cut in Frontier, as example:

"PULSE LASERS AND BEAM LASERS
One laser (or other gun) can be mounted at the front of your ship and, for
ships with a rear mounting, one at the rear. Some larger ships are fitted
with turret, which can each take a single weapon. There is a wide range to
choose from (see APPENDIX ONE: SHIPYARD EQUIPMENT section on page 69),
though the full range will only be available at the biggest shipyards. It
is rumoured that the military of both sides have developed additional
weapons for their own use, but this is usually denied
."

As we know, there are no secret military weapons in the game.

Another example:

"Beware of laser reflections from certain types of surface, especially when
at a glancing angle, Though the beam may have lost much of its energy it
can still cause serious damage. There are also words that the Imperial
Navy are developing reflective armour, which reflects much of a laser's
energy back along the incoming path, though this is strongly denied
."

Well, the denialists said the truth, since there are no reflective shields in the game! I know that FFE was developed on a tightly schedule and with pressure from Gametek etc.. but what is the explaination for the cut features that the manual hinted at in Frontier? Was the development of FE2 rocky too?

The stuff in the manual was probably just a bit of froth, to add a little excitement into the appeal of the game. Rumours or possibilities of being able to find or do something special or different in the game make it that bit more fun to play.

It's like the "Surrender or die!" threat you could issue an attacker in FE2...even if it was a Hawk Airfighter with 2% of hull left and you were in a Panther Clipper with 200 shields and a LPA, the opponent would still just laugh and carry on attacking.

It was to flesh out the Elite universe, wasn't there a mention of a ship in the FFE manual? can't remember getting old.

I am more inclined to think that those were cut features. I am pretty sure that the "Surrender or die!" message was meant to do something useful but was cut (because of whatever).

To quote the manual again:

"BROADCASTING MESSAGES

While in flight you can hail other ships using the Communication icon F4.
A range of messages for broadcasting will be presented on your headup
display (Fig 64). For example you can demand surrender if you are
fortunate enough to be in such a position. If your ship is on the
receiving end of aggression you can call for assistance, but there is a
risk some pirates listen for a call of distress and will home in on it like
a spider to a fly. If you have broken down the dilemma is the same, but
calling for help may be the only option open to you."

It seems that the manual was written with the original game design still in mind (before the cuttings).

Has anyone seen one in action?

Firstly, they aren't C8 right? So, no player access? If so, they're meant for capital ships?

Need more info please, thanks.

Whats the point in 2 stroke oil if you dont own a 2 stroke?
There isnt one (apart from the lovely smell) but for those that own a 2 stroke engine that can use it its very useful.

From what I can remember you could own one. They were quite heavy though so could only be fitted to panther clippers or similar. Unless you had the amiga version with the free mass/click invisible jettison button underneath that ton of rubbish in your hold. Then you could have a hawk airfighter with an LPA, eleventy billion shields, huge hyperspace drive and all the other handy pirating gizmos

That was always fun to have - a gun that's bigger than the ship it's mounted on.

Given the newtonian physics in that case you'd expect the ship firing the LPA to nearly break the light barrier - in reverse...

There were lots of things that were hinted at in the background material and preview articles for Frontier or were buried in the code and never used: Thargoid ships (which occasionally turned up erroniously at Imperial bases and could be flown if you edited your save game), fighter launch devices, cloud cities, mirrored armour, escort missions, worlds terraformed by alien races and so on. I'm not sure how many of these were ever intended to be included and were either abandoned due to lack of time, or simply didn't work well, or were just fluff to give the game universe a bit of mystery.

I'm still in an Asp Explorer in FE2......I gave up finding crew, waited months to no avail so............. :( No Panther Clipper :(

I've got a Panther on one of my save files - I literally spent weeks slowly upgrading to larger ships simply so that I wouldn't be caught short on crew when I eventually got a Panther.

Even in anarchic systems it doesn't even need to slow down to deal with hostile ships - most of them are picked off the windscreen when it docks...

My experience has been that, unless I was looking to argue right-of-way with Long-range Cruisers and/or Asteroids, the 20MW Beam Laser was powerful enough.

The Small Plasma Accelerator was still fun to use, but I feel that the Large model was mainly for bad cases of testosterone-poisoning...
