Newcomer / Intro What's the point of scanning asteroid belts?

The Universal Cartogaphics reward for scanning them is always 0 Cr. So what's the point of wasting time doing it?

No idea - I've scanned them on occasion just because they were nearby but never found anything of interest, never had any reason to actually fly there either.

Then again I haven't been playing that long.

Maybe they contain minable resources on occasion ? A small base maybe ? If no one ever scans them they would be the perfect place to hide something :)

So far they don‘t pay anything and i have to confess, that i never even checked, if special materials are listed in the system map after scanning. But maybe we see them upgraded, when mining gets some love during the Beyond series of updates.

Actually, come to think of it, that is a good question. I use to scan them, but when I found I gained no real information (other than the name of the belt), and did not increase the value of Universal Cartogaphics payout, I simply stopped scanning them. Maybe one of the more experience commanders would be able to shed light on this subject.

Question to Veteran Commanders:

Should we scan asteroid belts? Is there something to gain from scanning them? Is it better just to ignore them?

No, the materials are not listed after scanning. The info panel only tells you if they are "rocky" or "icy" etc. If you are looking for materials, scanning a planet lets you know the composition by individual materials, but the same does not happen for asteroids. If you are scanning to make money (which is the reason for most of my scans) then it seems to be completely pointless. As far as I can tell, asteroid belt scan info is not passed to EDSM, so there is not even a point to scanning altruistically for the benefit of future miners.

Planetary rings don't ever display their material composition either, but unlike belts they need a DSS scan to determine what the ring type is.

Ignore. You don't even get your name on a belt. So there is no reason to scan them..

I deselect them in my left screen filters to never show them on my NAV tab. They are not worth it for scanning. When mining, you can get a few minerals, but that's about it.

The clusters are persistent though, so when you find a roid that's 50% platinum, you can always come back to the cluster later (say 12 hours) and mine it again for exactly the same amount.

Since I stopped scanning asteroid belts I have noticed that EDSM is showing asteroid belts as part of the info on the star or body to which they belong even though I have only scanned the star. This seems to happen quite consistently but as an example, the last star I scanned was Phae Aeb BP-G c11-0. This is new to EDSM when I scanned it and the in-game system map confirms that nobody else has ever scanned this system. I definitely did not scan the asteroids, I've now got that turned off in the filter.

So it seems that UC must count the reward for the asteroids belts as part of the reward for the parent star. Hence the belts themselves are always listed as 0 Cr and there is no need to scan them individually.
