What's the point to attack random people?

Hi,

What's the point to attack innocent players?
I don't know if it's just AI or actual players, but I'm really knew to the game and I was supercruising to reach my first mission and someone attack me and my supercruise stopped. Ok WHY? I have nothing on me except my Sidewinder hahaha.

Some will call it "emergent gameplay" or an incentive for you to "git gud" or run away from "their" system.

I wouldn't get too upset about it in a starter Sidewinder - use your free rebuys to learn the ropes of what various player types will do, learn how to effectively escape, and use the different modes as and when you feel like using them.

There really is nothing to lose - and you can always clear your save and change your CMDR name if you think you are being seal-clubbed on a personal level.
 
NPCs can occasionally randomly attack you for no reason as it's programmed in. Some players will randomly attack you for no reason because they are <explicitive deleted>. Remember that you can play in Solo or in Private Groups if you don't want to risk the jungle that is Open. *Especially* if you're a new player learning the game for the first time.
 
Some people do it just to upset other people. Unfortunately such people exist in real life.

There are three ways you can deal with this as a new player.

1) Get out of Open. Join a private group such as Mobius/Mobius PvE or go solo, until you upgrade your ship a bit.

2) Just accept it, learn how to evade interdictions and combat. But in a starter sidewinder, you might have trouble regardless.

3) You died, you are back in the station. You want revenge, but no way can you do it in your little ship with your current level of skill. But there are players out there who can and will help you. Many will help you simply because they also hate seal clubbers. Check the station for other CMDRs, or send a local chat, letting them know there is a seal clubber in system, and would appreciate some help, either an escort or someone to go collect a bounty. If nobody around or nobody willing to help, get on the social networks, either here, or reddit, or elsewhere, and send out a call for help. Be careful though, most places have zero tollerance for "naming and shaming", so the way to deal with it is to let people know that you are in trouble, and need help, where you are, and if you know, the type of ship that attacked you. Someone might be able to respond and help. You can give the CMDRs name directly to whoever comes to your assistance (if you managed to get it).
 
For some people, the internet and online games is their chance to be a bully, and ruin things for others. They will come up with rationalization and excuses, but it's really going to come down to "they want to make other people upset". The freedom of not getting a slap for being a tool is too much for some.

I suggest getting away from the starter systems, and find yourself a home. I also don't recommend pledging to a galactic power, that'll only draw trouble to you early on.

Real players will look different to NPC's. On your scanner, real players will have a hollow square whereas NPC's will have a solid one. Also, real players will have CMDR in front of their name. Don't be fooled by the NPC's with human like names [smile] I just think they'd like to be human sometimes... although they'll give it away by saying ridiculous things like "I wonder how you made it this far with all the tasty cargo.... etc."
 
Fair enough; I've never farmed Newbie Sideys. There's just no challenge.
You were right in your first post. NPCs are predictable, but PCs in any ship arent. You never know what they will do next. For example, My pirate character is not a nice guy and sometimes if he sees another ship from another power he would interdict and destroy it. In this case it was a sidey, and right in the middle of his "Death is coming for you!" speech, the sidey rudely left and jumped away. Some beg, some fight, you never know.

If i play a game I expect certain characters i come across (maybe every character) to want to kill me. I didn't wrong them in anyway that I'm aware of. They're just either evil or see me as evil - an enemy to be slain. It's the case in most games. Peach didn't do anything wrong to Bowser for him to kidnap her, and Mario didn't wrong all kinds of koopa creatures and such who try their darndest to kill him as he walks across a landscape ... completely innocently. Nobody questions the npc trying to kill you. It's just the way it is.

In Elite it is not really any different, only instead of all npc's trying to kill you, only some do. The fact that some players will decide to kill you shouldn't be any different than if an npc just decided to.

What actually upsets people is that npc's are easy, predictable, avoidable. Human players tend not to be. Stop pretending the debate is about random killing. Random characters wanting you dead is the norm in video games. The complaint is that of difficulty. That's understandable, I dont play every game i've ever owned on the insane difficulty level. So nobody should expect every player to play Elite at the same difficulty level and like it or not, experience it or not, open offers the chance of extremely difficult encounters. If that's not your cup of tea, there are 2 other modes to play in that avoid that.

And to add to your post, the systems are like dungeons, some systems are safer than others.

It's not random if people are purposefully selecting delicious noobs in starter Sideys.

That depends upon who is complaining I suppose. The seal clubbers complaining about not enough tasty noobs to smack, or a noob with 5 minutes experience in a starter Sidey is complaining about interactions with another noob with 5 hours experience in a starter Sidey?
 
There is no point really trying to hunt down and kill the seal clubbers. They are the kind of people that will pull the plug as soon as they face someone that will beat them.
 
Define "Random" and "Innocent". Are they "Random and Innocent" if they're in a trade-fit cutter shipping thousands of tonnes of goods to a station owned by a faction, which contributes significant support to that faction, when another group is actively trying to overthrow that faction?

The smallest sidewinder could be running missions "just for some profit" and inadvertently hampering the efforts of other players.
