What's the rush?

So i've been scouring the internet trying to find the fastest way to make credits. And as I try to do these things in game, i think to myself this is really not fun. Why am I making a game be more like a chore? And as i think further on it, whats the point? Why reach endgame in a month or two? just so i can one-shot a sidewinder out of the sky? I've done this many times in games - get to endgame ASAP and get bored because let's face it, developers are slow to release new content.

I guess i just wanted to offer an alternative point of view, if you are doing what i was. There's literally a whole galaxy out there to explore. As i abandoned my original plan of trying to make money fast and instead tried to actually play the game, I found that i very much enjoyed seeing the real impact i was having in the star systems i frequented. I liked that i could incite a civil war or cause a faction to expand into another system by systematically choosing missions that favored these outcomes. It's these neat little details that make elite so enjoyable.

So avoid the grind. Do whats fun for you!

Hear hear. You've had an epiphany that many are still yet to have. ED really has NO end game at least not in the sense of other games where you get to a maximum level, or become head of the guild, or king of the mountain, or whatever. Because ED -doesn't- put you at the "centre of the universe" as a "VIP character" you get to make your OWN plot - they just give you the galaxy to do it in. There's no career path, no rushing to level up, no point where you "finish" or "win". So take y our time, enjoy the whole galaxy, get involved as you like with side quests, game plots, or just simple trading/combat/smuggling/bounty hunting/etc - whatever floats your boat. The sidewinder's just as much fun to fly as the imperial clipper - it's just different. It's really only a grind if you make it a grind coz you're not actually required to grind TO anywhere.

here here, I'm taking it slow as a bounty hunter very slowly upgrading my eagle, I just feel that trading turns the entire experience into a chore/job as I learnt on beta. Why is everyone in a rush to make millions? See the galaxy and chill out.

I have to agree with you on this, getting into a heavy grind will ruin this game for most I think.
in alpha it was easy to grind up to an anaconda in 1 night so grinding meant you could test more but since income has been lowered to where it should be I expect to take at least 1 year to have an anaconda if I ever have one. once I got into this mindset the game just got better and better for me to play and I got less stressed out, stop checking the ban ballance to see if you can afford the next upgrade everytime you hand in a trade or a mission and it gets more relaxing.

I agree. It's not just Elite, a suprising amount of people don't put fun as their highest priority when deciding what to do in a game. Instead, they use the game's reward mechanism. Arguably these should be aligned a bit more than they are in Elite, but the fact remains the same.

I play quite relentlessly and haven't even made my first million yet :highfive As long as I can maintain my fragile wee Eagle I'm happy zooming around the galaxy waving to folk. "Coo wee!" *eagle twerk*

Same here. Brainlessly grinded my way up to a Type 6, then decided to use the money to exploration-fit my Cobra. Visited the Pleiades, discovered my first black hole, traded and bounty hunted my way across the galaxy. Much more fun, though sometimes i wish there was a bit more content. Still, that way it's far better especially in the long run.

I also tried making fast credits when I first purchased the beta. As soon as I stopped using tools to help me make quick credits, I slowly discovered that manual trading was more fun by not knowing whether I was going to make a good profit, even for items that were classed as exported items. Arriving at stations/platforms and finding that they don't buy what I am selling until I check another station/platform inside the same system; where they happily give me a good profit for what I have to offer or forcing me to find another place to sell my stuff, furthering my exploration data.

I wonder if the way you play in this game reflects in any way your political affiliation in rl ?

Be an interesting poll to see :)

I'm just having fun partaking in Civil Wars and making a difference to economies and galactic outcomes! :)

Money is secondary to me, since I'm fairly satisfied with my ship - Any upgrades I can buy is obviously a bonus, but I don't want a Type-7/9. Wouldn't mind an Asp though. 6 hardpoints > 4 hardpoints! :D

Personally the trading game is enjoyable - although, I do have a big old google spreadsheet for this that my friends and I can all see and edit.

However, I don't do that all the time - infact the way I do things is to simply record all the demand and supply for a station so that I can do the trade missions and courier missions knowing that whatever spare cargo space I have I can fill with profitable goods. Between all that I generally pick up all the kill pirate missions I can get a hold of and also zip off to the conflict zones and do a bit of fighting - all this in the Cobra! What an amazing craft.

So yeah, I don't get the point of solely doing something for maximum profit - Min Maxers can of course play this game in their own way, but it's not for everyone!

Oh, and a fun game to play if you're with your mates is to see who can pull off the best entry through the starport slot without crashing. Not recommended in your prize ship though.

And its those that are rushing to get the big ships that come on the forums and complain there are not enough ways to make even more money! :O

People need to relax a bit and enjoy the game. Except for those taking part in the rush for the big prizes for reaching elite first... those boys (or girls) can get back to the grindstone :D

The galaxy isn't going anywhere, why visit everything now? There will be much more stuff added, not to mention the VR experience.

I'm in no rush to explore everything in the first few months with a crappy ship. I like to travel in style.

Personally I enjoy trading. I keep my own little ledger that lets me compare how much I can make now in a single trade-run compared to last week, the week before, etc. Trading isn't everything though. I keep a Cobra and a Viper parked at Mars High for when I feel like progressing in my Federal Navy career. I don't get to play as much as I like sometimes only 15 to 20 minutes or so a day... not enough time to really enjoy bounty hunting or working a combat bond but plenty of time to pull in 150,000cr in a trade run. When I do get a decent block of time available to play for an hour or more that's when I'll spend my time running BB missions or patrolling NAV beacons or extraction sites.
I haven't yet spent a lot of time exploring. Most of my exploration has been incidental discoveries while on a trade run. I need to get an Adder and have a go at it.

My T6 has been sitting in the garage back at Thiin while im out in my cobbie doing a rare commodities round and surveying any interesting systems i find en route. Not making lots of money but having fun. And decided to pop back to aulin and ibootis just to catch up with the goss. No real reason, just fancied it...

The rush for me is that i am stuck in Viper for far too long... more or less 100 hours. I have killed 1024 ships in it. And if I will not trade 3/4 ships are out of my reach. I cannot even make money to get ASP this is the problem. After 100 hours of doing all professions and mostly bounty hunting i have 6 mil. Asp makes sense as far as i knwo when you have at least 10 mil in pocket. Enjoy the ride does not fit in here, as i am not enyoing anymore in the same bloody ship (tried all of them in price bracket to ASP).
Also game is completely bugged and still in phase of balancing so for example assasination missions do not complete.
