What's up with clean bogeys attacking me? (not wanted)

So I've recently taken up position as a bounty hunter and hanging out near the nav beacon's seems to be where the action is. So atleast 3 times after taking out 1 or 2 bounties, clean bogeys will open fire on me, I just try to ignore them until they take me down to 50 percent hull and then I open up on them. But guess what? Now I have a darn bounty on my head! What's up with this? Bug?

Its easy to hit someone by mistake. But most often it seems they are with the same fraction as the NPC your trying to hurt. You can check it under contacts. Sometimes you can plan your fights with bigger ships if you have "authority" near by and the target is wanted. Good for some fine bounties in the beginning of the game in the sidey.

Yup, NPCs have faction reps just like players. If you shoot someone up, their faction buddies might open up on you regardless of anyone's criminal status.

The HUD simply shouldn't show enemies outside of war-zones as hostile unless they've attacked. Not with the minimal amount of information the HUD conveys, it's just needlessly confusing.

I wholeheartedly agree! They should simply stay yellow/orange.... or some other color to denote that they're unfriendly but not necessarily intent on killing you.

Indeed! If only CGA wasn't enjoying a resurgence in the year 3300, we could have something as good as Tom Tom.

Kill warrant scanner. They may have outstanding charges in other systems. Scanning them will reveal a bounty on them if it exists. Sometimes you will get more bounty as well by doing the scan if they have multiple charges from other systems.

I think it depends on the system you decide to go bounty hunting at. If its lawless then there is nothing wrong with shooting you :)

A clean bogey? Surely that's a contradiction in terms...

Anyway, they may be clean at the moment but they may have just cleared their previous criminal status by paying off their fines...

There is something funny going on though. I was doing this exact thing in a federal system. At one point a Federation fighter started opening fire on me, even though I wasn't wanted. I checked all my faction standings, anything to suggest why he would do that, but there was nothing obvious. No wanted tag on me (I had only been attacking wanted NPCs anyway). Since he didn't show wanted to me, I had to jump and quit/reload. Bit odd. Glad it was just a fighter and not an anaconda, or it might have been game over :)

I think the game needs to become a bit more transparent as to who has what kind of relation to you, and why. And I agree that safer systems should have a much lower chance of criminal activity compared to low security systems.
