Newcomer / Intro What's up with the fuel error message?

I'm in Eravate with a package going to LHS 3447 -- it started me in LHS 3447 and I had a package going to Eravate before.

I stopped at a station, filled the fuel up, started to head there and it says "exceeds maximum fuel" - fuel gauge shows almost half blue half yellow.

If I was able to fly to this system originally, how come I can't fly back there? I did use a station to refill the fuel but it won't let me use the jump drive now.

is it something to do with mass? It's a package of 3 units of aluminum. Checking the map though, it appears there are no closer station routes to that system. In other words I may have taken a mission I can't do - even as one of the closest jumps in this starter ship.

Sorry - I'm a bit frustrated trying to learn this stuff and this kind of thing is ing me off.

It will be your ship mass. It sounds like you are trying to jump back with more cargo than you set out with.
You could sell a piece of equipment to lighten your ship and buy it back at the other end. The discovery scanner for instance.

So it is mass.

It's a mission. Take 3 pieces of aluminum to this system...

I can't make squat in this game and trying to trade seems to be a nightmare and now it's "sell off chunks of a ship you know nothing about so you can try and operate."

I'll just abort the mission and sell the aluminum on the market. That'll get me a reputation hit but it's better than trying to figure out how to tear apart a ship I don't know squat about.

Is that merc pack ship better? I have one somewhere (not sure how to find it).

You may also be able to take a circuitus route to get where you are going when a direct jump is too far. The message actually refers to your Frame-Shift Drive's maximum fuel PER JUMP. Most drives max at 2 tonnes per jump until you get to the higher ratings. It IS possible to get some places that you otherwise couldn't by using your Super-cruise to get a small bit closer when the distance is just outside of your jump range.

What ship are you flying and how are you equipped?

Your Eagle will be in a station in your starting system, use the system map, and look for a blue ship icon that indicates which station your ship is stored.
