Elite / Frontier what's with the warp map? does it have a function?

i never understood... what's with the warp map thing.

i've only ever really played frontier first encounters to any length, never elite or elite2 that much. but i hear theres 8 galaxies in elite? i've only been in a tiny tiny piece of one galaxy in frontier first encounters. are there other galaxies you can visit in ffe?

ps, i just tried to navigate at laobe to go to the planet new world, and it crashed. :D (repeated)
guess we're not allowed to go to the new world :p

Huh?

No, but the eight "galaxies" in Elite were simply rectangular maps, each sprinkled with 255 stars - FE2/FFE is much more massive.

Laobe? Can you give me the coordinates? There is a handful of systems that crash the game on entry.

He means the galactic hyperdrive i think.

There is no such thing in Frontier or FFE. It would be unrealistic and the F/FFE galaxy is big enough anyway.

alas, i havnt quite got past a graphical hiccough to getting it running through wine here in linux where i could effortlessly sort you out with a screenshot, and dont know how to take screenshots in windows (lie, i'm just too lazy / dislike windows too much, to bother going to do it just now to see). i'll get the co-ordinates maybe again some day when i'm playing. somewhere off up to the left, a good few squares i think at least. yellow star next to a gap in the stars, iirc.

i meant the ... galactic? yeah, well, it's a button with a galaxy icon on it, so yeah, that'll likely be the one i meant. u can zoom in and out of it, n u see some names, spica, sol, betlguese and others. u can zoom right out to see the scale and size. yeah, 500,000,000 stars is it? haha. that map... does it do anything?

depends on how far off the beaten track you go i guess.. might be useful for getting a bearing back to perseus arm... i've certainly never travelled far enough to make any practical use of it. still, it graphically shows how big the map is, and how small you are which is nice enough and the devs (braben, etc) had to have some quick way of showing off the true scale of their creation, which is stunning still to this day.
