What's your ping/packet loss/country

Hello CMDRs,

As in the topic; In Elite, what's your ping, packet loss and where are you playing from?

Coming from Australia, I have awful internet access but it got me wondering just how bad/good(?) it is at connecting to Elite servers, compared to other countries. I understand we all have different connection speeds, but we are likely all on broadband of some kind and the individual circumstances of the average user shouldn't be an problem, especially if you have a history of playing various games online without issue. I'll add that playing games online isn't an issue, typically I get sub 100 pings in all games. I also Play Elite with no real issues to speak of, playing in a Wing and so on, with that 400+ ping of mine.

Perhaps a simple format, I'll go first:
Country: Australia
Ping: 465ms
Packet Loss: 7.5%
MTU:

If you're unaware, these can be found in your network options within Elite

Thank you if you can help.

Averages:
The number next to the county indicates how many results from that country have been submitted. The figures to the right are the (max/min)
Australia(2):

Based in Australia also.

Have a good internet connection, but experienced high ping rates and packet loss after the 2.3 update. My ping rate was regularly > 350 ms and packet loss up to 16%. Made connecting to ED very difficult. Some other CMDR's suggested I use a VPN. Worked like a charm. My ping rate was slightly reduced, but my packet loss was dramatically reduced to around 4%. Haven't had a connection problem since.

My guess is that VPN's networks route UDP packets better or more efficiently because they have less traffic and are geared towards P2P, and error free routing is just as important as the speed when going to the other side of the world. If you try VPN choose one with a server near you and in the UK (Ireland). It will route though its network.

Might be worthwhile telling us what IP address or domain name you are pinging?

I think the OP is saying that these numbers are already there for us to read in the Networking area.

Indeed! Just go into your network settings, in game, and these metrics are there to be viewed. Thanks :)

Thanks, A D. I play, about half the time, through a VPN so that I access the American servers. I didn't think to test that, but I will. Mostly, I'd like to understand the average connection speeds the average user gets, just connecting as per 'normal.'

No prob's - note the edit tp my OP re the location of the servers. Makes a difference, because you want the VPN to do all of the lifting. If you connect to a server in the US, it will only go VPN from there.

Country: Scotland
MTU: 1388
Ping: 84.1MS
Packet Loss: 12.1%

I'm curious about the packet loss - that seems high to me.

Germany
Packet loss 0.00%
Ping 45-65ms
MTU 1480

Playing via VPN causes alot of high ping to you and lag for the others.
Thanks for destroy our all smooth game experience.

Not strictly true, as A D said, some of us who'll never get a good ping, due to geography, unless FD put in more servers can lower our ping by using a VPN - irrespective of the extra hops, our connection to the servers is improved.

I tried to make a similar request for information yesterday in this thread but it didn't get much traction....

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/350668-Multicrew-connection-woes-and-MTU

My ping and packet loss are really variable at 30 - 650ms and 0 - 10% typically (but I did get 99.9% yesterday!). I'm in the UK. Also my MTU is 1388.

It's odd though as my internet connection is pretty good quality with a low ping (10ms), jitter (1ms) and packet loss (0%) typically reported with the normal quality checks. Also my MTU is set to 1500 and I can routinely ping with unfragmented packets of 1472 (i.e. minus the header). I assume these test are all TCP rather than UDP based?

My multicrew and multiplayer experience with ED is pretty bad...

In discussions with support I think the packet loss and pings are an average of all of your connections (server and P2P), therefore these values are probably varying depending on who has been in your instance.

They're just playing the game the way they want to. They don't have to care about the feelings of others.

Do they?

ADSL? VDSL? ISP (I'm with Plusnet on VDSL)

Causing lag to everyone should be banned for having a bad connection.
Region lock as well.

Hmmm..
Scotland (Eastcoast) Virginmedia 100mbs download / 6mbs upload
ping: 50ms
packet loss 12.5%
mtu 1388 ( even tho its set at 1500 in commandline)

(comparison, via http://www.speedtest.net/index.php my ping to Maidstone is 22ms
and my ping to Aberdeen is 48ms .. its faster to London than a 2hr drive??)

ADSL? VDSL? ISP (I'm with Plusnet on VDSL)

I put more information in the original thread I made but I'll paste it here as this thread seems to be getting more attention! :)

Example Collection format:
Connection Score (1 - 4): 1 no MC connection possible, 2 rare intermittent connection with drop outs and bugs, 3 intermittent connection without bugs, 4 always connects and no bugs
Location: Country
ISP, DSL type and speed (down/up): e.g. BT, Fibre/ADSL, down meg/up meg
Router make and model:
Connection type: UPnP or Port Forwarding
MTU: value from network menu
Typical Packet Loss: value from network menu
Latency/ping: value from network menu

My info:
Connection Score (1 - 4): 2
Location: UK
ISP, DSL type and speed (down/up): BT, ADSL2+, 16meg/1.1meg
Router make and model: BT Home Hub 3 (Type B)
Connection type: using UPnP currently but have tried both, Netlogs says that UPnP fails but somehow still seems to partially work some of the time, port forwarding is worse
MTU: 1388 (despite 1500 being set and 1472 possible via ping)
Typical Packet Loss: 0.0 - 10% depending on what I have been doing and when in the session I check
Latency/ping: 30 - 650ms+ depending on what I have been doing and when in the session I check

Ping: 102.5ms
Packet Loss: 9.4%
Country: UK

I'm on bt fibre (80down/20up). Quite shocked how terrible my ping is! Testing with speed test, I usually see pings no higher than 12ms, and usually around 7ms.
