What's you're "restart" limit? Assuming you have one.

There are many ways Elite is played. Some of us keep on going no matter how many times our ship gets destroyed, while others play a self-imposed "iron man" where they wipe their save if they die. Others are somewhere in between, where certain "deaths" are acceptable and others you just feel it's time to go back to square one. Or perhaps an in-between where they go back to Sidewinder, but keep their rank and whatnot rather than wipe their save.

Assuming you are somewhere in between, what conditions do you have to reach before you feel it's time for a start-over?

On the current save, there's no limit for me - I want to keep it for testing stuff in a risk-free environment.

However I'm looking forward to multiple saves and a proper IM as denoted in the DDA (maybe without the option to switch to solo IM).

I'm not in a hurry, as I'd prefer the game to run rock-stable when it's implemented as losing an IM character to a bug could really hurt, but I'd really love to have some clarity if IM is still on the table and if multiple save slots are still planned. If IM was cancelled, I'd wait for multiple saves and start a second save with self-imposed IM rules and if multiple saves have been cancelled, I'll just get another copy of the game to have that IM slot whilst keeping this save.

I've died twice so far. Once because I was new and didn't understand the game. Used insurance to recover. The other time I died it was because I was just plain stupid. Got caught with no fuel and no fuel scoop in between stars (wanted to go to a star that I couldn't jump to because of excess mass - so I tried to fly there without jumping into hyperspace - had the trip down to a 12 hour arrival time when ship went dry - who knew - floated out there for awhile - ran out of oxygen - gagged and choked and finally succumbed).

I'm a firm believer in "Stupid ought'a HURT!".

(To Captain Kirk) So I assume your self imposed rules would be along the lines of "bulls**t glitches don't count" but any other death would?

I have to admit I've never been one for absolutes in Iron Man. Personally I'd like to find a way that incorporates ejection and recovery as well. For example, if I crashed into a station or was shot down near a planet, it makes sense to think you could be recovered, in which case I'd happily take on the insurance costs and carry on. Crashing into a sun, or shot down in a system with no station or ship traffic, it's obviously game over.

Or better yet, something that calculates the odds of recovery based on system, proximity to planet/station, system traffic, etc.

I have died about 4/5 times since launch.

Since I started to role played suicide terrorist 16 hours ago 4 deaths. I have had to stop to recoup some credits.

No wipe for me unless the game forces it

I've died 9 times since launch. Once accidentally, and 8 times when I've got angry with a CMDR stealing my bounty and attacked his viper in my eagle. I never learn.

No limit at the moment. It doesn't make sense to start over if your ship is destroyed as all that happens is you are safely transported to a nearby station fit and well to claim on insurance.
I do not commit suicide in real life if I make an insurance claim... That is a very defeatist attitude.
If it were possible to die in the game I think I would have a limit of 1 time. Like Iron-man. I always played the original Elite like this and found it was a lot of fun.
I have made 2 insurance claims since release.

For those that have died like 1 or 2 times, what have you been doing? Something wrong in my book. You must be in solo and doing crosswords in between knitting!

Well - the DDA thread on death mechanics is pretty clear on IM and escape pod mechanics. Preferrably, there will be multiple save slots and IM as denoted in the bottom section of the linked post.

In the worst case, there's neither (both features haven't ever been promised).

Assuming the worst case should apply, I'd get another account and play that as IM, meaning:

- If I mess up - i.e. kill myself: reset save.
- If my ship gets destroyed in combat, I'll (litterally) flip a coin to determine if I managed to eject.
- If it's a clear bug, such as spanwing inside station walls, it doesn't count.

So far I've only been killed due to the first reason (twice), but I wouldn't log on to my IM account if I was drunk ;).

Games such as Mount And Blade i do play by my own "ironman" type rules but so far beyond credits i haven't found enough ways to sort of have a "unique" character so i don't bother in E.D.

if characters had faces i'd probably reroll every death for lulz.

No reset limit for me, yet. The time I lost my 7 mill cobra because I had no insurance came close, but I elected to keep my ranks.

Give me an Ironman mode where only open play is possible, bounties etc count 2x as much, trading and exploration the same, and death is permanent, and I'll play that....

....as long as I have a second commander slot. Because this is some serious time goes into this game, and if I lost my progress totally now I'd probably not bother to ever log in again.

ten times the ensurance of my most expensive ship.

i temporarily go down to "five times" when buying a new ship that helps me get money faster.
since i own a T9 already, this won't happen again soon ;)

Hmmm... I like your idea of the coin flip, but being a gamer at heart, think it could be improved with a d20 roll with modifers based on circumstance (ie +5 if near station/inhabited planet orbit, -5 in isolated system, etc... ;) )

Hmmm... I should write that up.

Died once since the gamma wipe when i got the random blown up bug when approaching a platform thingy. Have about 1 m insurance on my asp and 18m in the bank so can afford it a few times. I play carefully!

Until we have a proper Ironman mode, I've decided not to take the insurance option, unless I die due to a bug, glitch, or server lag. If I've got a ship in the system where I died, I can get that, but if not it's back to my starter system in a free sidewinder.

Other than that, I probably won't start a new Commander until we can have multiple commanders, or I get completely bored with Inga. I do have another idea for a Commander, but their story won't start until hers is finished.

Lost two ships since launch, both to friendly station fire bugs.
Trade in open and have never attacked anyone, but got novice rating thanks to those that attack me.

If you've lost more than a few ships you are doing it wrong. If you don't at least try to look after your commander then it is just too gamey.

I won't restart.
If, for whatever reason, i had to start all over, that would be it for me.
I'd call it quits and move on.

Aye. You guys either are way better than me, or play it very safe in space. I have over 50 insurance claims now worth around 30 million lost.
