Whay does the grame take so long to load?

Just wondering.

I click "Play" from the loader app and it take a while to get to the main menu. Then I choose Play from within the app and it takes an age to load as the ship spins round in the holographic loading screen. I'm curious as to what takes so long.

The spinning ship once in the game takes around 30 seconds for me, does that sound about right? I guess it's loading the background sim, graphical objects and alignment for your instance, map data, stuff like that. 30 secs seems ok to me

During the spinning ship bit, the game is loading in all the assets etc, and trying to set you up in an instance. Times can vary a lot depending on server load etc Having a SSD helps a lot too :)

The game has a lot of assets that it needs to load into memory. This basically means that once you're in the game, you won't see another loading screen (excluding FTL between systems).
If you want it to go faster, have a look around for an SSD hard drive; I picked up a Samsung Evo Pro 126gb for under 100GBP (or 154 USD).

Crikey, 30 secs? What a disaster!

You lot don't know you're born :)

When I were a lad, back in '86, it took 5 mins to load just 48Kb worth of data off a cassette tape, and failed at the last second about 33% of the time...

30 secs? Don't talk to me about 30 secs... :D
In '84 I had The Hobbit on tape for C64. It took an hour ... yes, AN HOUR to load the game.
But I agree that as technology has improved, so have our expectations. 30 seconds to a minute might not seem long when written down, but it's forever when you're sat at a computer waiting.

It's loading all the assets in the instance that you are currently in.

As with any game, there needs to be time to load.

The time it takes to load depends on your system configuration. If you have a low end machine, it will take longer than someone on a high end machine with an SSD.

oh wow that takes me back, the old 1530 cassette drive on the C64... and when i finally bought a 1541 floppy drive i thought i was in heaven

Yep, I have a SSD.

Just wondering if the bottleneck is data synchronising over the network.

I'm not complaining, I used to load Elite onto an Acorn Electron from cassette tape in 1984-85.

Game takes about 5 seconds to load on my machine. I guess im just another dumb Texas boy who doesn't know how to do anything except ride horses and farm cattle.

And type and play games, come on, don't put yourself down... ;)

It takes my PC only 5 or 6 seconds, as does my son's PC.

I got my loading time on the C64 down to under 10 seconds by using a widget to take a snapshot of the loaded game by pressing a button when the game was running and then saving it to tape. The new file was in compressed format and was tiny in size. My friends thought it was magic! :D

It takes longer than a minute from my ssd, I have even reinstalled the thing.

Everything else takes seconds, even windows boots in around 9 seconds with everything except steam loaded and ready to go.

I wonder if it's only having 1gb RAM on my GPU?
