Read First When did D.B. say there will be no artificial gravity ? (If at all)

Greetings fellows,

I remember ( and obviously others, too) that David Braben mentioned there will be no Artificial Gravity or Inertia Control in the game. But I'm unable to find when or where he said that, so I wanted to use the collective knowledge of you to find out.

So, can anyone give me a source, or was it just a rumour ?

if you have a look in the fan creation forums you will find a thread titled 'implications of zero g'

Drew, being one of the authors is sure to know more than the rest of us so i tend to trust what he posts as FD's current (but by no means final) word on the matter.

I was musing about this one today. We've been told that there is no anti-gravity tech and it seems unlikely that the ships would be able to incorporate a carousel for simulated gravity.

Thanks AndyB(EDB50).

The bold part was what made me wonder in the first place, as I have read this thread, too. But I would really like to know if there was some kind of "official" statement regarding this. I saw quite a lot of people discussing that ( I recall we actually already talked about this in regards to the implications for writers on the aspect of lacking g in flight and stuff, mine, yours (Andy) ), but it starts to look like it is only a rumour to me.

The reason I'm asking, is because I think it's mandatory to include Artificial Gravity and Inertia in Elites Lore and I think this should be decided fast, so writers can avoid inconsistencies between the game and their stories.

@Captain N : Nice ! Thank you very much :D

Proceeding to convince David Braben otherwise :D

you got my vote :D

If space storm goes more than 2 books I'm throwing my main characters 2000+ years into the future so they can get a ship with AG/ID and come back again ;)

Just think how much harder it must be for FD to make the actual gameplay work around zero-g.

As writers you can just avoid using the word 'walk' and wave your hands when anyone asks questions.

That's another reason why I would like to see Artificial Gravity. But since this game will be able to handle zero-G anyway, it would be hilarious to have to possibility that it can fail :D

I think it is a great possibility that the writers get so much info on the gameplay and it's background in such an early development stage, as it allows them to synchronize much better, which should help immersion in the game as well as in the stories evolving around it.

Also, I made a discussion topic about introducing AG/IC into Elites Lore in the Private backers Forum. I would be happy to have a lively discussion there :D

you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons

still waiting for permission, and from a fan writers perspective it makes things so easy as you needn't worry about describing zero g or the equiptment used to cope with it.

Damn, I won't have access to the writers Forum myself, so I thought it would be wise to post it on the "Lowest level" of Private Forums... I hope it works out for you soon :)

If you'd like to read it anyway or contribute to it, PM me and I will send you what I wrote.

I made this same point on the technical discussions thread - it is possible to have artificial gravity in-game without invoking pseudoscience - it's merely a matter of pulling a constant 1G for the duration of a flight.

Any kind of fine manoeuvering will mean losing gravity - so when fighting or docking etc... but then in those instances you and any passengers would presumably be safely strapped into flight seats. For the bulk of the journey though, artificial gravity is no problem at all. It's just a matter of telling the autopilot to plot a constant 1G trajectory.

Larger ships that would normally want to use artificial gravity this way would have their cockpit, loading bays and other internal areas oriented orthogonally compared to say a spaceplane, so that the occupants' "up" direction is the craft's "forward" direction.

Gravity's just an acceleration... We already have acceleration, so it would defy reasonable expectation not to use it accordingly...

Simples! :D

The trouble using acceleration as gravity is the deceleration. You'd end up on the ceiling. Unless you turn around your vessel and decelerate using your main engines, but somehow I think that would be not in the spirit of E:D. More like FFE.

But when would you ever not want to turn around and decelerate with your main engines? (other than when manoeuvring to dock, of course!) They'll always by the most powerful thrust available to you, and so result in the shortest travel time. And if you are also using the acceleration as your "artificial gravity", you win twice!

I say we should not be slaves to Hollywood's vision of how space flight should work - we're smarter than that!
