When exploring do you have to land at a base in order to quit the game?

Newb question,

I just started exploring and I was wondering if you head way out do you always have to plan to find your way back to a base before you can quit the game for the night?

Thanks!

That would make exploration impossible :D some people are weeks even months away from the nearest station. But as mentioned you can just log off in space wherever you are.

Been wondering the same thing for ages ... I mean, I know you *can* just switch off whilst you’re still in space but it never feels particularly *safe* ... I’m also planning on going out exploring once the new Q4 stuff drops - guess it’s something we’ll just have to get used to!

Nope, log off anywhere. Space, planet, supercruise, docked, undocked.

In most cases you'll just start where you left off.
But if you log off in supercruise, you'll log back in, in normal space.

Is it just me who kinda has to find a planet to land on to log off while exploring?

Nope. It's not just you. It's my tradition as well. I'll even keep exploring until I can find a place to land. Usually some small ice moon orbiting a gas giant, but anything that might have some nice scenery.

Dunno if you can now, but in the past there have been issues with commanders getting a death message because they seemed to have re-spawned inside an asteroid/planet/moon/[insert any other body].

Because planets and all other stuff continue their orbit and might end up on the same location where you logged off, usually, before I log off, I tend to climb above the orbital plain of the system I'm in, to be sure I don't win the lottery when I log back in and end up dead.

But like said, maybe they fixed that.

Dont think so. I still recommend to do the thing you mentioned above... make sure you don’t log off on the planet/moon path to avoid nasty things out there

The only thing that is not recommended is to leave the ship hovering above the ground; either on the ground or out in space is fine, but in the "air" can cause problems.

It is uncommon these days, but you can end up inside the planet. If that happens, close out the game and don't load Horizons when you log back in. This will force you into space. Then, if you want to, you can reload Horizons and be ok.

Trying to fly out of the planet will only get you destroyed.

In one word; NO!
If you want to be almost 100 percent safe. While in space, aim at your next vector, drop from super cruise and idle back to zero. The ship will come to a compete stop and unless you happen to be in the path of somethings orbit which continues even if the game is off, nothing will happen. I use to deliberately land on planets until I found this out.

I know its cool to log of in space or in your SRV but it doesn't quite feel right.

No, I often do this while out in deep space. Find myself a scenic landable world with a great view, land the ship, and tuck myself in for the night. I do the same in the SRV sometimes too.

Quite happy to park up anywhere really in space on planet in buggy, never really had an issue coming back in game, only place I don't quit the game is close in around a star as I'd rather not take heat damage making a mess of things getting back into supercruise, as you will start off in normal thrusted flight mode if in your ship.

If its safety you are worried about think of it this way, many players log off mid combat and they are fine :).

(Could not resist.)

I seem to be with the majority for a change. If I am out exploring, I drop to normal space preferably well away from everything and shut down. But if I am at a station, I can't help it, I have to lower the ship into the hangar first before logging off. I know, silly of me, but it just feels right. Same as making sure I have refuelled, rearmed, repaired, cleared any cargo, fines, bounties or whatever before logging off. At least this way I know I can just take off when I start the next session and not suddenly realise I am still carrying cargo or something.
