when reactors go bang!?

When I heard that reactors were not going to go bang so easily, I thought it would be nice to have a visual effect to illustrate the fact. I think it would be a nice touch.

And that if you were close to the ship when it went, you should get a bit of a blast and mabe spin out a bit. It does feel a bit odd some times being realy... realy close, to a anaconda as it blows up in this massive, screen swallowing blast with huge chunks of ship slamming into your face, you just shrug it off, and bathe in the warmth of victory. Would be nice to have a bit of ''pzap!''.. ''now let's get the hell outa here!''.

I'm with you here. It should harm you more and as you proposed even throw you of a little. That would give you something more to consider, regarding distance to keep from an exploding ship.
Damage and impact could be scaled by ship size
 
Ship destruction damage should be a moderate punch, not a life ending stab. I can get behind something like that.

Heck, all explosion type damage should exert some physical forces on your ship...

I love how when you get ripped from super cruise you spin out.. some thing like that.

I remeber in beta if you got hit with a rail gun in a sidey it would flip you around, missles could do the same.. woukd be nice to have more of that too

and yea not like a massive amount of blast damage but some thing to consider, mabe if you were down to 10hull and you were 10ft from ground zero it might kill you. Take a ring off a cobras shield perhaps

EM pulse causing damage to internal modules or causing them to go offline. If something like this was implemented, B modules could have greater resistance to the blast and EMP resistant hull plating could be an upgrade option. Might even pave the way for the return of the fabled 'Energy Bomb'; an EMP pulse that has a chance to damage/disable modules of all ships in a given range, including the one detonating it, resulting in a race to get systems back on line.

Yeah this could be good, would add a bit of tactical thought towards the end of a battle, although they would have to put in a no self destruction within stations mechanic in.

Cool. Reminds me of Mechwarrior 3 and 4. Reactors going critical were something to AVOID! Or at least to look at from AFAR! :D

Please, devs- implement this... Pleeeeease.
 
Yeah, the spin out caused by beta rails should defo be a part of being hit by the shockwave. I really miss that as it happens - used to love the feeling of losing control for a second or so and having to fight the spin.
 
Love the energy bomb idea!

I think there should bee alot more things that make you loose controll.. it adds fear and panic and helpless ness. Where you can be franticaly press ing buttons and adusting stuff to help gain controll once more

Never understood the term 'energy bomb'.
What bomb is not an energy bomb?
 
It was so cool in freespace 2 when bigger ships were starting to explode you knew that now is the run away! I thought elite had the same thing but no :( In elite I usually just run through the explosions :p
 
The effect I would love to see is when the targets shields come back on just as you get them to explode, this has happened me a few times. I would love to see a contained explosion, just for a second and then ....... release.
 
If anyone here remembers Freespace, they had this (in fact there's already a number of elements which are very close to Freespace, e.g. the System/Engine/Weapon energy management... but I digress). In Freespace, larger ships created shockwaves that would damage your shields/hull if you were too close to them and give you a bit of a shake/push along with the shockwave. All great fun :)
