Ships When should I buy a Cobra?

How much would I need to outfit it in order to make use of it from both a combat and/or trading stand point? I have enough for the ship but now sure how much I need to outfit it. Currently, I am in a sidewinder with just an upgraded jump drive. Thanks in advance!

ASAP, been tootling on my 2nd-account and had forgotten how much of a leap the Cobra is over the other early boats. Mine's now on a couple of mil inc. mods and ship; you'll earn that quite quickly once you get the Cobra.

ASAP CMDR, you'll not regret it.

I've never purchased a ship before. Upon purchasing it for 395K. Do I then need to spend more to equip it or does it come stock fitted with modules to make it flight and travel ready and then I can choose to upgrade said modules or buy different onces?

It comes with stock 'E' grade modules across the board. It may have a lower jump range than your sidewinder, as you upgraded the FSD drive, but everything else should be an improvement.

this. As soon as you can afford the stock Cobra, go for it. It's much better than the (stock) sidewinder, has more cargo space, bigger shields etc without an upgrade.

Use it for trading and upgrade your bits and bobs as appropriate - remember to sell your hardware before your ship, as hardware keeps it's original price (you never lose out on selling equipment) but your ship devalues by 10%. If you sell your ship with hardware fitted, you lose 10% of the hardware value. you'll soon make the money back for the ship and can start specialising in your area of choice!

Right on, Commander, fly safe o7

As far as I can remember, even the base power supply you get with a Cobra is enough to power at least 2 med pulse lasers and 2 small multi-cannons. I think that's what I equipped when I got the Cobra. I then, just upgraded it as and when I had the funds.

Buy the Cobra as soon as you can but don't forget to buy from a station with a discount. I think I got mine from LHS347 Daltons Gateway maybe, was a while ago but with the discount it was great value.
Fantastic ship, It lets you smuggle, bounty hunt, trade and crucially escape. I ran mine with 4 pulse in HIRES, never needed to go back for ammo and always bagged good money.
I've moved on now to other ships but I miss the noises the Cobra made and still take it for spin if a smuggling mission catches my eye.
Also I have noticed it always drops me closer to the station than my current ship which is another reason to add to the list of likes,

Here's a few more high tech systems in the same region (aligned to Li Yong Rui) Gladutjin, NLTT 13249, PLX 695, Jadlillke and 109 Piscium that offer 15% discount and perhaps the bit of equipment you need.

Another option to consider is the Adder (as long as the view out the window doesn't annoy you ;)) it's a solid multi-role ship like the Cobra and a mid range one is well priced

A lot of people hold the Cobra in high regard and I cannot argue with anything said about it. However when I started out, I looked at the upgrade path options before me and I knew I needed an intermediate ship to get me to where I wanted to be. That is to say in the pilots seat of an Imperial Clipper.

So by this train of thought, the next ship after the Sidewinder was more-or-less a means to an end. I knew I would be bounty hunting almost exclusively, so the lower cost of hull and components led me to the Viper. If you think you'll be using the Cobra from now on then I say the sooner you buy it the better. But if you see it as a stepping stone to a Python or other ship, consider how you'll be earning those funds and you may be more efficient with another ship.
