When should I jump in and buy this game?

Hello

I've been long looking at these forums nearly every day for the last few years (I don't post though). This has been THE game I've been waiting to be made since I played frontier on my Amiga back when I was a kid.

I wasn't involved in testing and I have not bought the game yet, the reason being is that I want to fully enjoy a fleshed out complete game to the fullest.

As you can imagine, looking at the forum since release, it has been alarming to say the least, and has put me off buying the game for some time...

However more than half a year has passed and, though I am eager to jump in, I really don't want to feel frustrated, not feel immersed etc... I want to increase the chances of being in love with the game from the start, not have the feeling of "I will be able to enjoy the game when the next patch comes out".

So do you think it's ready? Or shall I give it some more time?

Thank you

The problem with waiting until it is ready is that you will always be waiting. FD are adding new content (and fixing problems) all of the time. To use a different example, a friend of mine was looking to buy a new PC (his first), and had done a lot of research. He saw that there was new kit in the pipeline, and so decided to wait until it came out. Unfortunately when it did, it wasn't as good (initially) as expected (so the reviews weren't great), and there was other kit being developed, so he decided to wait. A year later he still hadn't bought a PC.

NOW!!!! She's calling your name DO IT!!! :D

You should jump in and play because a limit of twenty cargo in space will make you feel safe, even at a station!

Few weeks ago i decided to finally buy the game after i was thinking almost 1 year if jump on alpha, beta etc. Now i am very sorry i didn't buy the game 1 year ago. My advice is buy the game and enjoy it, it's worth every dime.

The games 6 months old people are having mixed experiences if you want the complete game wait another 4-6 months but it's good now. Steam sales are coming up so you might get a discount next week but remember that gives money to Valve if you don't buy directly from Frontier. I played the original Elite and Frontier games and this is fairly close to them but you have to remember this is the multiplayer/MMO market now.

If you don't mind bugs and fixes for a couple of weeks after big content updates get it now! if your the sort of guy that picks fault with developers if things don't quite work wait.

If you're from the background of Elite and E2: Frontier, you'll find there's MUCH more to do in Elite Dangerous, and it's an incredible game to play. In some ways it's like being in an enhanced beta program, a la Windows 10, where the game is available a year before being 100% complete, but don't let that put you off. The combat, graphics, sound, ship models and the galaxy are nigh on perfect. I've been playing since Gamma (November 2014) and being inside an evolving game is very, very different to buying an AAA title for a console where "that's it". Dive in. Oh, and remember that humans are amazingly good at complaining, and very few threads start off "the reason I love mining is because...". People like to draw attention to flaws, either to present a positive viewpoint of the flaw to the community and developers in the hope it will be addressed, or to come across as negative, moody gits who only bought ED because there aren't any other games to play.

If your money situation is good then buy now.
Or if you really like the Elite franchise buy now.
Or if you have a lot of time spare then buy now.
Or if you really want a quality space game that feels real and not so gamey then buy now.

In all of the above cases the game is great to buy now.

Otherwise it may be better to wait until the price drops to say 20 dollars.

My suggestion with about 80 hrs of play time: Wait.

At the moment FDev can't seem to grasp how to properly work on a game, so they release updates at stupid moments and these updates break everything (Today when I logged in my ship was constantly descending and ascending on the George Lucas station elevator, so don't try to say that Powerplay only broke the missions)

Even disregarding the amateur-hour updates, the game is grossly unfinished at the moment. It seems to miss key components that will hopefully be added in the next couple of months.
Honestly, for an average player, it's not worth the full price tag atm. It's only worth it if you're either a huge space sci-fi nut or if you are extremely nostalgic about the older games.

For me it's the former and I can enjoy myself by doing menial tasks, but I can't recommend it in good conscience to others.

So you want to buy the game when it's starting to decline?
I was gamma tester and played it a lot. Before power play i got saturated and stopped playing for a few weeks. Not because i suddenly hated the game, but i felt that i had seen enough of it at the time. Now with power play i will play again... as long as i am entertained. Don't expect "THE" game that will keep you entertained forever, that is unrealistic. But ED is pretty nice already, come and join the fun.

So do you think it's ready? Or shall I give it some more time?

I say wait for another year or two.. maybe five, just to be safe

Well, although I wouldn't say five... :D I do agree it won't hurt to wait another 6 months to a year. The game is far from finished; very much still in the beta phase.

It was released early, so far as I can guess, to help funding ongoing development. However, it still lacks a lot of useability features you'd expect from a mature finished product of this impressive scale, and the developers don't seem to be prioritising those things. They tend to come in little bits with each update. There's also the issue of content, but I'm sure you know enough about that if you lurk the forums. :p

Another thing to be aware of is that the game does suffer from inconsistency in its design philosphy, where some parts are trying to be a bit too realistic, and others are downright arcady. Having said all that, it won't hurt to by the game now, if you know what you're getting into and accept that it's an ongoing experience. If you take your time with it, and don't buy into the "end game grind" way of playing, then I think you'll like it.

I've put a good amount of time into the game since the Steam release, and have contributed to the Frontier store, because ultimately I do believe that this is a great product in spite of my and other criticisms. In a market today which is all but devoid of original gameplay, Elite is a refreshing new entry in an old style of gameplay where you make your own fun.

Even with all my recent complaints, I would say it is worth the £40 if you have some patience knowing it has bugs and flaws.
Especially worth it if you have an Oculus DK2 and supporting hardware.

i had severe immersion problems whit the game, until now.
1.3 did it for me, and from now on i won't be waiting for the next patch to fix the game for me, but just take them as a bonus.
so if you ask me and if its immersion that you are after then i would say that the time to jump in would be now.

Why wait?
No, really?
It is not pay to win. It is not subscription based. It is in constant development (yeah, I agree that there are things which need to be fleshed out), but things are getting better with every update.
Instead of wondering if you should buy it, go buy it. Try it for yourself. Find your cup of tea. You have clearly done the research, and lurking in these forums for years you propably have a good idea of what this game is all about.

Want to make this game better? Buy it. Give constructive criticism. FD has proved that they read the forums many times over, but they cannot satisfy every costumer to even the miniscule of details. I like to think that they have a "the whole is more than the sum of it's parts" approach.
Buy it, try it, and if you are still disappointed, leave it, and wait for a patch. Then try it again.
That's my advice.

I'd say 1.3 is a pretty good base to start your ED experience with. There are things missing, things partially developed, things moving in directions which some may not enjoy, but some do. I can't tell you what you may like/not like about the game, but if you've got the spare cash and you like what you see, I'd say go for it (if you have a joystick that is).
