Newcomer / Intro When to buy a new ship

When should I move on from the sidewinder and to what? Im sitting on about 100k from bounty hunting at nav beacons with 0 upgrades.

I feel like I past the "derp" mistakes. I've crashed into a sun... also I can land my ship no problem. My issue is that I just completely quit playing eve when I lost my big ship randomly. I am terrified that I might buy something then mess up.

The information I suppose I am looking for is if I buy an eagle and some upgrade for it for 70k then smash into the dock on the way out and die... How much is the fee? How much of a credit buffer do I need?

I think if you make sure you have 25% of the value of your ship on hand, that should be enough to cover insurance. Note that as you add higher quality modules to your ship the insurance buyback goes up, so that's why I say "total value of your ship" not "what you bought the ship for".

There's no pressing need to upgrade, just like Eve some ships are suited to a purpose. You can explore all the aspects of the game at the moment in the sidewinder.

Insurance costs are pretty cheap until you move on from Cobra. Keep 5k spare and you'll be fine if you decide to upgrade.

You should move to a new ship when you are comfortable with moving to a new ship or feel you have reached the ceiling of your current ship. Regardless of the ship you are in, there will be plenty of those unexpected "derp" moments. It is Elite Dangerous afterall. You will lose your ship; count on it. I finally got into a long awaited Type-6 Transport and lost it within 45 minutes. Insurance covered the replacement, all I had to fork over was 56K in credits. Now if you run out of money and blow up your ship you can take out a loan to replace it. You have a credit line up to 200,000 CR. The pay back of that loan is in 10% increments from every profit you make. You also have the option to declare bankruptcy. EVE and Elite Dangerous are two totally different games. The few things they share in common are:

1) Expect the unexpected.
2) Uncertainty is the most certain thing in life.
3) Don't fly what you can't afford to lose.
4) Be friendly, but be suspicious of the motives of others.

It is your decision to fly the ship you want, we all can tell you what we think you should fly but that hardly matters. Everyone has different tastes, including you. I think you should be in Viper, that is my two cents. When buying a new ship, try to at least have its value laying around to spend. For example, say you buy a ship for 900,000 CR. Make sure that after the purchase you still have at least 300,000 - 600,000 CR. If you are buying a 70,000 CR ship try and ensure you have between 70,000 and 100,000 CR laying around after purchase time. Also remember that if you are in the Great Outback of space and you decide you don't want your suped up ship for whatever reason, be mindful that if you sell it you will have a lesser FSD (jump drive). This means you could potentially be stranded if every jump out of your system-wide circle is 8ly and you can only jump 5ly. This happened to me because I needed to save money so I downgraded without thought towards modules and how much credits I had on hand. I was stuck within the confines of 6 systems for 2 weeks real-time until I could afford a better FSD to get out of my predicament. Don't be me. Good luck Commander. Fly safe.

Is there any pace you can see your ships overall value? Or do you just have to keep a running tally in your head or write it down.

You can see your ship's value including modules via the shipyard at a starport.

Thanks for the quick replies/suggestions. Sorry for typos im on my phone.

I've been playing only solo so far. Think ill jump into multiplayer before I upgrade.

One more question. If I buy a new ship and get low on cash can I just get back in the sidewinder if I don't sell it? And after buying another ship is the sidewinder still free to replace?

You will meet many great people in Open Play. Perfect opportunity to forge long-standing relationships with other Commanders. This will prove critical and beneficial when you need help the most. Honor goes a long way in the Elite Universe.

at any time your right hand UI can show you not the current value of your ship but the more important number... how much it will cost you to get it back if you prang it.

If you have a Sidey with 100k, consider getting the hauler if you want to trade or mine. If you intend to continue your focus on bounties, I would upgrade your combat effectiveness in the Sidey, and later upgrade to a Viper.

I upgraded to an Eagle as my first bought ship , I'm happy with that but in looking into the future and possibly exploration what would be a good ship? Would the hauler or one of the freighters be a wise idea? All that cargo room to fill with scanners fuel scoop or what not, tips welcome.

Honestly, I just upgraded as soon as I could and screw the risks. But, really, as other people have said, make sure you'll be able to replace your ship when you die, and you'll be hoopy.

I guess that depends on how willing you are to stay around the "starting" areas, because I haven't seen anybody since I struck out in a random direction and got horribly lost. The life of an explorer is a solitary one.

If anyone should pass Futeno/Muan Quigga, say hello. It's lonely out in space :p

I upgraded to the Hauler briefly, and then quickly moved on to the Adder. I'd say go for the Adder if you're into exploration, that'll let you fit your basic scanner and fuel scoop, and still have 2 more slots for cargo bays and whatever else takes your fancy. Plus it's a pretty versatile ship, I've been doing a bit of combat and trading on the side, even some smuggling. It's really up to you what you get, but the Adder is a good choice, or go for the hauler if you want a cheaper alternative.
