When to purchase the T9?

That's the thing that puts me off a Cutter actually. Obviously I don't have the cash atm to buy one, and would likely need the cash cow to make said money, but if I did, I might still be put off by the rebuy costs. Especially with how soon the Cutter may be pretty redundant due to the new T9, giving only relatively minor advantages for the price.

But then again, I would like an Imp flagship of some kind, so maybe for once style would win over form, but that's a long way off so I should probably put it to one side for now.

If you don't have the rank now you'll probably have enough credits by the time you do.
Credits are pretty easy to come by.
In general I just use coriolis to budget, then buy everything at whatever best discount I can get to cover a few rebuys.

Cutter is fun to fly but I'm considering getting a T-9 too.
I like variety.
:)

It's not just raw cost. I know I can make the money. It's bang for buck. T9 is pretty damn near as good a trader to the Cutter post buff, for a fraction of the cost. Then factor in rebuys and it's much scarier to fly a Cutter than a T9. The rebuy will sting that much more. Now sure, I might see less rebut screens in the Cutter, but that doesn't take away from the impact I'd feel looking at each one over the T9 which would be a lot lower.

But as I said before, that's the future. Probably need to get back on topic.

OP when?

Never. The T-9 is an abomination. Spaceships should always be pointy and never nearly as wide as they are long.

There's probably a ratio for the perfect spaceship.

I recently bought a Type-9 in anticipation of the buffs coming in 3.0. I already have a Cutter but I prefer the industrial look and feel of the Type-9 for trading. The cockpit view is also amazing. It wasn’t worth losing 200t of cargo space compared to the Cutter, but with 3.0 coming the Type-9 is finally the awesome trading ship it was meant to be with that new C8 slot. Not to mention the mass reduction!

If you are going to get a Type-9 why do I think it makes sense to purchase it now?

Because, as others have noted, there are real advantages to getting your modules engineered to G5 before 3.0 goes live. It’s a lot faster to get to a minimal G5 roll. Once you have any G5 roll wait until 3.0 goes live, then convert those modules and finish the job to get them maxed out. I am in the process of doing this now. Still need Selene Jean, Broo (for my beam turrets) and a few others but I am well on my way to getting this new Type-9 engineered.

The main purpose for my T9 will be to support the long range requirements of the Station Repairs, so weight may be a small factor, but compared to 750T+ of cargo, not a big one but it may still make a difference.

I think the big fuel tank might be enough to get to the Pleiades without a scoop, so that will need a look as an alternate option.
I do find it jarring whenever I go back to a ship without engineered thrusters so that will definitely happen.

Oh boy, did I ever overestimate that fuel tank range.

Post-engineering (1 G5 roll on all modules, so the benefits are a bit random) I'm getting 19LY with a pre-3.0 full load - 432T.
C6 slot has Shields (there's bugs out there)
C5 slot now has a Fuel Scoop.
C2 slot has ADS because I never travel without one.

20 jumps from Catuntinigi to The Oracle - fuel would run out before halfway.
The tank is big enough for Economical Jumps, but 50 jumps there and 50 back is worse than sacrificing the 32T for the scoop.

So currently, an Annie is probably a better bet for these long haul repairs, but post-3.0, that extra 256T will give the T-9 a clear advantage.

Maybe think about swapping that C6 fuel tank for a C5 one now? :p

Can't say I've ever been short of fuel with a C5 tank and 32t does make a noticeable difference to the jump-range, especially when the cargo hold is empty.

Yup, probably a good idea - that'll still be 4 or 5 jumps in the tank.
