When to upgrade

I'm kinda getting a little bored with the base game and am considering upgrading. But I've heard Horizons doesn't actually add that much as of now. The season pass is currently $40. Does it ever go on sale on Steam,or is this the cheapest it is going to get?

Now that the next stage is being set in Season 2, I would guage that an 'excellent' question.

If price is a factor, you may want to wait until just after the upgrade.
So many reasons...

Does anyone know of a proposed 'pass sale', or re-instatement of the Lifetime Season Pass in the coming weeks?

If you want to be able to compare the current iteration of Horizons to the 2.1 release, I would suggest you buy season 2 now. If you don't care what yesterday brung, wait for the sale.

I'll let you know when I don't have any monies, because that's when the LEP will be available. I missed it in Beta time by a couple weeks due to not hearing anything about this game, and then when it got re-released I couldn't swing the scratch, despite before and after having enough cash to get it twice.

None of us know if or when the season pass will go on sale.
One thing you can be pretty sure of is that it's not going to happen before 2.1 has released.
Steam summer sale perhaps, but that's pure speculation on my part.

If I were a betting man ...

My guess would be that Horizons won't have a major sale until closer to the release of 3.0 and if they do offer another chance to jump onto the lifetime pass membership it won't be until pre-orders of 3.0 are available.

I could be wrong.

So far, for me, Horizons was a waste of money. YMMV.

I don't know what 2.1 will bring, but it looks like its going to be more reasons to drive around on planets (forced to probably, if you want "Engineers" ship upgrades).

Problem: landing takes far too long and has ridiculous phases, driving is indescribably boring, you have to position your vehicle in a pixel-perfect location to be able to rejoin your ship and then you get to take off again. Yawn!

I've gone back to playing v1.5 - that way I avoid being offered surface missions. Hopefully v1.6 will bring new missions and/or fixes for the missions broken in v1.5.

I would wait until after 2.1 hit and gauge how much new content their is in 2.1 from the crowd that has it - the beta forum should be a good place for that info at the beginning of May.

Unlike many I still do a fair amount on surface. I particularly like the base assault missions, they are fairly easy with a friend if you use combined arms. Some can be quite hard if you are a single player and trying to keep your bounty down (such as assaulting a base in one of your designated home systems). Whilst driving around can seem similar to entering USS in space, I think the base assaults are entirely new game play, certainly kept me hooked for a few months. Clearly did not keep others entertained.

As someone else said YMMV.

Currently Horizons isn't worth the price unless you really want to drive around on airless. If that was you, I'd assume you'd have bought it already no matter the price, so my advice would be to wait at least until 2.1. Maybe the 2.1 content and mechanics - and more importantly how it's all implemented and balanced - will make it worth for the less explory types, but that's still speculation.
Regarding sales, as others said, it will go on sale at some point. 2.1 seems to be quite chunky, so Frontier will probably advertise it a fair bit. And considering the steam summer sale will come at around the same time as 2.1, it's quite likely Horizons will be part of it. Nothing drastic like 50% off, but I'd be surprised if it doesn't go on sale at 15% off.

I'd wait to see if 2.1 tickles your fancy. First impressions look quite good and there's still much to reveal so coming from the base game should feel like a very different game - but the proof is in the pudding and with a game of massive scope there's always the chance the thing you might like won't quite hit the mark. Although PvP seems to be getting a lot of love in 2.1.

Edit : I bought beta for Horizons and have had great fun. No regrets.

Horizons is an excellent early game addition - I clear saved and you couldn't get me off the surface as that was where you could make money - Even when I came off surface if was to go to a station within the system

Now I would say that I am Established (python and Type 9, asp and a couple of Cobras all with specific role) and I have to say I am hardly planet side

Horizons at the moment doesn't scale very well - any ship bigger than a cobra is useless on the surface - it just takes too long to fill. Hopefully what 2.1 may do is add in more things to do - pretty much at the moment its a recce mission is a lightly equipped rover, I would like more than anything to see specialists Heavily armed SRV (bigger gun and armour slower speed) and a miner could be a good start

Good suggestion. However the beta forum will not be a good benchmark. 90% will be criticism and rants about broken mechanics, regardless if they are really broken or simply misunderstood. "Really FD?!", "ARE YOU KIDDING ME? ! !1!!11", "Don't you know about QA FDEV?", "Lower requirement for feature X, otherwise I can't test it", "I'll stop playing until FDEV fixes this utterly broken patch", "Feature X will DESTROY PvP".

Better look out for a good youtube video.

If you want to wait for a sale, wait for a sale, regardless when it happens.
I got ED vanilla on a steam sale.

If you're getting bored, don't force yourself to keep playing. Just mix in some other games and come back to ED when you feel the space itch again or that sale happens. Unlike many mmos, you're not really falling behind some content curve.

If you want new stuff to do and don't mind the price that much, now is a good time to get horizons. I preordered it and regret that as little as getting vanilla on sale. The current content might not be "worth" 40 bucks, but you do get more and more stuff as the season progresses.

Planetary activities have their own learning curve. By the time 2.1 hits live, you can learn the new planetary mechanics and use all that new stuff it will bring, without feeling lost in your srv.

Have you seen the healing lasers thread? Its both sad and hilarious at the same time
"Healing lasers wont heal enough. game is broken. I quit"
"Healing lasers heal too much. FD broke the game. I quit"
"Healing lasers means you need wingmen to heal. I like to fly solo. FD is making me interact with people. I quit"

Well if you liked exploration without horizon you will love Horizon. If you only do exploration i would say that you should get horizon. If you like to do missions horizon bring more of those. If you trade, horizon does bring couple new good trade roads but nothing amazing. For combat horizon currently bring nothing, but 2.1 bring stuff for that (npcs flying above surface and guarding POIs) and all that stuff we will get from engineers.

I find Horizons has been worth the money already.

Landing on planets has changed the whole feel of the game for me. No longer are they just window dressing for black space, each orb is now a real visceral exerience, and wow some of the views you get to see.

The skill and time required to land on a planet feels about right to me, high G planets can be quite tricky, and zooming around in a buggy is a complete hoot, but expect a bit of a learning curve!

As said YMMV so wait for a sale and then enjoy it for what it is. Or watch a few landing and srv jump and race videos, and give in to temptation... you know you want to :D
