Dear Devs .. do you even care anymore? Could you please fix the horrible lag in odyssey? game literally runs 8x worse than horizons, not just inside settlements or on-foot, even when comparing same place on planetary surface inside SRV (not close to settlement). In horizons I get 8x higher performance than in odyssey, it's been like one year since Odyssey launch, perhaps it's time to hire professional programmers who can optimize the game?
Here's a reminder to those, who don't know what optimization means and WHY game lags so bad: Below you find 2 screenshots of a settlement in the dark, it's from power restore mission. The "light" you see is from fires inside the building ... a build that has NO windows on the location where light is leaking thru.
I'd like to explain to those, who don't know much about computers, that entire game is about 69gb in size, but graphics cards only have about 2 - 12gb VRAM (video random access memory), so it's impossible to load entire game into VRAM. Some of the game is also kept in normal RAM, so it's not possible to load entire game into RAM and even if it was, it would never happen, games are not suppose to run off of RAM only.
So way it's suppose to work, is that game should only render in models and textures when they are VISIBLE to the player or about to be visible, because if they're un-rendered on the momeny it disappears from field of view, then it will cause scenes where you can see objects "spawn in", which would be better solution than extreme lag.
But on below screenshots, you see fires inside the settlement being rendered in and leaking thru the building, that causes your GPU (graphics processing unit) to work a lot harder than it should, because it has to render in everything that is inside the settlement, even tho you can't see them.
That's the reason why Odyssey lags SO BAD, because it renders in stuff that shouldn't be rendered at all. I'm nowhere near the building, why is all that fire rendered in?
It's same with ship lights, if you go to a settlement on dark side of the planet and it has no power on, it causes all the shutters to close. So it's totally DARK, BUT if you point ship's nose towards the settlement and turn lights on, those lights leak thru the entire settlement, causing extreme lag.
I should probably make a video, showing the FPS difference, but putting out those fires will make FPS go from like 20 to 50-60! This is how much useless work your GPU has to do in order to render in stuff that should not even be visible. Would be nice to get developer's feedback on WHY they have done this, but I doubt they even care to read it. They are all super rich and probably run RTX 3090 in SLI, so they don't even know the meaning of lag. They made the game for super-rich only, which is quite frustrating :/
ALSO I'd like to mention that Horizons runs FINE in native 4k, I get solid 60fps! I can also run Forza Horizon 5 in 1440p with mostly maxed out graphics and GPU use is only about 40-80% depending on scenery, but in odyssey GPU usage is always 100% due bad optimization .. PLEASE DEVS FIX THE LAG! I have been waiting to properly play this game for over a year now...
What made me come and write this post, was the update 12, which is a DISASTER! more problems than fixes and STILL NO OPTIMIZATION, I was hoping that this update finally fixes the lag .. but nope, guess it's too much to ask
NOTE - this post is for developers and I don't follow this topic, so save yourself some time and don't try to faf faf at me for writing a complaint about the lag, I won't be checking back at this topic ever. Thank you.
