Description
Pushing the limits and get your ship blown up. Do this while having a NPC assigned to your ship. And learn how your NPC are gone....

When will you fix this issue? as whenever you want to do anything remotely dangerous, leave your NPC pilot at home, as it will permanently be lost upon ship destruction.

I had not died in a long while and had totally forgotten about the NPC Pilot issue if dying, loosing the ship I have no issue with, loosing my NPC Pilot is different issue.

Steps to Reproduce
Get a ship with fighter hangar
Hire a NPC Pilot
Go and die
See how your NPC is gone forever.

The explanation that was given to me by FDev Support is that your NPC Crew are not members of the Pilot's Federation so no one comes to scoop them up after the ship explodes.

The reason I have heard was something among the lines that when they show you the rebuy screen, the game have no knowledge about your NPC, and when you get to check in the station, the station has no information about the NPC, as when you opt to have the NPC board your ship, the NPC is stored on the object that is your ship, and when your ship is destroyed, they destroy the object that was your ship, so destroyed the information about your NPC, when you are at station and disembark your crew, by choosing to, or by switching ship, they store the NPC in your global configuration.

So how do they get your ship back then? They have a global copy of your ship that is updated everytime you have visited outfitting or done any engineering to your ship. And it is simply this global copy they use when you pay the rebuy costs, and if you for some reason do not this, they simply delete that global copy and put you in the starter sidewinder.

So why not have a simple global copy of the NPC? Good question, I guess the biggest problem is that your NPC is constantly updated and that means that you have to updat the global copy eerytime you have had a fight as the NPC can gain combat rank. It would be very upsetting doing a long session of ranking up your NPC and then on the way back to the base, you managed to get blown up, and you get back your NPC, but all that progress that you made the last hours are gone. Did you NPC encounter a head injury or what?

Well that was I learned from listening to streams when this came up. Do not take this as fact, but as my best guess on the issue based on the information I have available and by observing how the game appears to work behind the scenes.

Then what the in game reasoning for why your pilot dies/goes away vary alot...
From what you where told, they are not Pilot Federation and thus no rescue, to they got so upset about your ship destruction so they simply left after the rescue.

I do not buy any these excuses, as I pay big bucks to train and keep my NPC Pilot....so adding a couple of bucks to rescue that NPC when I get rescued is a no brainer. And who would ever join your crew if they know they will be left behind if things got really bad?

This is more of a suggestion than a bug report as FDEV told us this is the way it was on day one of having NPC crew.

It is by design and not due to a bug, the interface tells you this will happen when hiring the NPC.

However I like the suggestion and I would prefer to keep my pilots too, especially after paying them so much money :) so +1 to that.

(Oh and also.. CS was 'wrong'? as the pilots federation sends you emails when they rank up and they're getting 'pilots federation ranks' so they have to be a part of it :))
