When you're 170 odd LS from Trevithick Dock, die in an Eagle and click 'free ship'...

...thinking it's the equivalent of buying a Sidewinder at Trinh Enterprise, Chacobog, because the Eagle didn't appeal, so you decided to engineer a Sidey to fly in Open instead.

But it's so long since you last died, having undertaken the long trip to Elvira Martuuk's base, plus the 300 LS that qualified you for her services, that you forgot 'free ship' would spawn back at Trevithick Dock, magically teleporting you 170 light years back to Trevithick Dock, far from your engineered Viper and Cobra. And for a chilling moment, you think you've gone back to square one, until you realise you've still got your money, and your ships are still out there.

Of course, I could just ask for my Viper to be delivered to me, which would take about 35 minutes, and cost about 20,000C (the Cobra, strangely, would cost nearly three times that, for the same trip), then fly it back, and buy a new Sidey to engineer.

However, as the point of buying the Eagle in the first place was to fly a disposable ship in Open for a bit, and find out what things were really like interacting with other players at low risk, I'm tempted to fly the Sidey straight to Kuhn in Open. Only problem is that I'm getting 'route plotting failed' when I try to set a course. I'm guessing this is because my Sidewinder's FSD isn't up to the trip, so how can I change that, when upgrading any of my gear seems to violate power draw limitations?

If I were to get rid of my weapons, say (or even my shields, probably not a good idea in Open?), would my ship become light enough to make the difference?

I'm unlikely to do anything until the weekend, so any nuggets of advice would be welcome (and I might be missing an even better fix). I'll probably call the Viper, but thought this might be informative for any other players who find themselves in a similar predicament.

Fly to either:

Fairbairn Station
Yaping Enterprise
Warlidge Terminal

(All in LHS 3447)

Buy 2A FSD. Your range should be massively improved. Improve other modules to Class D to sort out any power issues.

You have to leave Trevithick and go to the larger station in the system. From there you can get better modules. Upgrade your power plant first, then your distributor and so forth. You might want an extra fuel tank if you don't have a scoop, and you know your destination has what you need.

Thanks, both. I'll have a go at buying the FSD. I've always assumed that the power draw box, or any box, being red meant I couldn't buy the item, but maybe I'm wrong about that, and there's a way round the problem. Fingers crossed.

"(the Cobra, strangely, would cost nearly three times that, for the same trip)"

The amount of credits for the transport fee depends on the total value (ship plus all installed modules) of the ship. For example it will cost you a few million credits to transfer bigger ships such as the Anaconda.

It's weird, I've always thought of the Viper Mk3 as the more badass, and therefore more valuable ship, but I suppose getting the Cobra for free in the original game makes it seem cheaper, in spite of the cargo capacity.

So I couldn't wait to test it, and upgraded the FSD drive to 2A, then bought a 1B fuel scoop, and everything is rosy. 19 jumps to Kuhn now, so shouldn't take long, once I get back to it, especially if I leave scooping until I really need to, to maximise the jump range.

Ta, all :)

This is a slight return to Trevithick because, well, I had a slight return to Trevithick, and not because I picked the wrong option. Other players may have noticed that when they 'die' while wanted, they respawn at a detention facility, and have to pay their fine/s before they can go any further. In my case, it was 99 light years from where I was ganked, but no sweat, it was an interesting twist.

But then, I bit off more than I could chew with a wanted Clipper, and on selecting the right, new Asp Explorer option, saw that it was still going to respawn at Trevi. So, another 170ls trip to [Chernobog?], when I've had my fill of bounty hunting in Brani.

Maybe this is an attempt to discourage station gankers, as they won't now re-appear right where they were causing all the trouble. Be interesting to see if players think the 'cure' is better than the disease.

Buy a better FSD, D rate everything else to save weight.
