Where am I?

Okay I know where I am but Evarate , but is this a good place? Do you just randomly drift from place to place hoping for a better system for your needs?

Where is federation space, empire space etc? am I in the centre of it or on the outer reaches.?

SOL = capital of federation
ACHENAR = capital of Empire
ALIOTH = capital of Alliance
LAVE = old starting place from Elite 1984

Just to name a few interesting places. I'd avoid SOL in your case.

Spend some time on the Galaxy map, there are different filters you can apply.

Among those are faction filters, you can check out where the alliance, federation and empire systems are.

YOU decide what's a good place, yes.

It has pristine belts ? good place if you're a miner

It has a high player activity ? good place if you're a PvPer

It has a good network of different economies ? good place if you're a trader.

Don't get tied up with thinking about what you're "supposed to do". There is no such thing, and it can be difficult to grasp in the beginning. :)

On the galaxy map go to the view tab and set to show systems by allegiance .
Then zoom out a bit and you can pan around the map using right mouse button to go up and down and both mouse buttons to go back , forwards. ( I think they're the defaults ?)

Empire space is down below Federation in general.

Evarate's pretty crowded so you might want to head out to somewhere new. But where too? Well that all depends on what you want to do.

In order to figure out where to go, knowing all of the tricks of the map is key. I'm going to dump my list of useful things I've learned so far about the map.

  • The lines between stars are based on your maximum jump distance. This is why you can't plot to everywhere in the galaxy. Also because some systems need a permit (Sol for example).
  • If you plot a route and one of the legs is a dashed line, you won't have enough fuel to make that jump. Make sure you know where you are going to refuel, either at a station or fuel scoop.
  • When you're docked at a station with a Universe Cartography shop that lets you sell your data, when you open your map you can buy system data. It took me a couple days to figure this one out.
  • Plan your route while docked at a station with a map shop on it, for the above reason.
  • Finding which faction the star is, is as easy as switching from realistic view, to map view and adjusting the dropdown to faction.
  • Play with the map filters! There's a ton and basically all the data you'd need.
  • When looking at stars to fuel scoop, the galaxy map info tab has the star's letter. You can scoop at stars labeled as on of the following: B.A.F.G.K.M. (Use "Be a fine girl, kiss me" to remember)
  • Trade economies feed each other. Extraction sells minerals / metals to Industry, Industry sells components to High Tech, etc... Look for these patterns!
  • Systems with multiple stations with different economies are useful because sometimes you can get a trade route that's profitable without having to jump between stars.

At first I was concerned about travelling out from Evarate, but I found a little spot up by Liaedin that ain't so bad. I'm trading metals around there.

I hope that helps, fly safe out there!
