Where are my asteroid shadows ?

At some point during the beta, asteroids were casting shadows... I don't see them anymore.
Is there a combination of graphical options I'm missing or have they been removed completely ?

I see shadows elsewhere (like on the outside of stations), hadn't noticed them missing in roid fields.

I shall have to have a little look but before I head out, you are definitely not in shadow of the local planet when in the roids right?

What'll really grind your gears is seeing a star cast a shadow on an asteroid ring. First time I saw that, I was very confused.

Yeah the lighting system still needs work, but then what doesn't?

They removed multiple light sources at some point. You used to see shadows flicker all over the place when you came upon a star with an asteroid ring. It isn't critical, so, one day in the future, they will probably address.

What's wrong with the light ftom a star casting a shadow on a planetary ring or do you mean an asteroid ring around a star?

I've seen brown dwarfs cast a shadow onto asteroid rings from the light of the main star, as though the brown dwarf is not producing any light itself. Now, what would be appropriate, and maybe the effect is too subtle to notice, but the area where the brown dwarf blocks light from the main star should be closer in color to the dwarf itself. The rest of the ring would have a radial gradient of dwarfish (huh?) color on the inside to the brighter color of the main star as you move out (relative to the brightness of the dwarf to the main star).

I suppose it could be an effect of the filters that stop us being blinded by the stars but maybe just the engine only showing shadows from the main system star (to reduce the expense of muliple shadow producing light sources).

Right, that's me off to look for a ringed planet around a brown dwarf orbiting a main star.

Yeah, that sort of effect is pretty much exactly what the current lack of multiple light sources is denying us.

I suppose it's maybe also one reason why that lack exists - because it would give players with higher-end systems a material advantage. If two players drop into a shadowed RES around the same brown dwarf, and one of them sees pitch darkness while the other sees clearly-lit red rocks due to his higher graphics settings, then only one of them is going to have a good time hunting there.

they also forgot about god rays in rings close to stars. Rings are very dusty and this should work in an environment like that. also yes shadows use to be in rings, what happened? graphics downgrade to suit the xbox?

Nope, I checked with a star as the light source !
My ship is casting a shadow on the asteroid, the asteroid is not casting any shadow (neither on my ship nor on another asteroid ).
They probably deactivated the shadow casting attributes for all asteroids for optimization purposes, but it would be nice to have the option to turn them on.
