Where are the starter systems?

I started the Gamma somewhere next to Eravate.. is there a list somewhere of the various different starter locations?

I haven't got a mental picture yet of the macro scale of the galaxy and all the maps seem too detailed (or pre-date full galaxy). According to http://www.elitedangerouscentral.com/ I'm maybe 70LY from Sol. Are all the starter locations in that kind of area (I think the galaxy is 100,000 LY across, so it can't be a coincidence I'm that close to Sol)?

The start system is random, I started 120lys away from SOL. Some have started in a poor back water system miles from any real developed systems, think yourself lucky you started near SOL.

Ahh, this is good to know as I seem to be in the HIP cluster and can't work out where the heck I am. How do you find out how far from Sol you are?

In Galaxy map you can specify Destination and click the little play icon

Bring up the Galactic Map , type in the Navigation bar, SOL.

The map will scroll from your position to SOL and when the marker stops at SOL, it will indicate your distance and position from SOL.

RE: The potential starter systems:

1. Enter the Galaxy Map.
2. Click on the NAVIGTION tab and type SOL in the search box and press return or click the play icon.
3. Click the VIEW tab.
4. Click the MAP button.
5. Under SHOW BY COLOUR select ALLEGIANCE.
6. Deselect everything apart from FEDERATION

Zoom out and scroll around, with the exception of SOL itself and systems which may need a permit. What remains are your potential starter systems.

I started 87 light years away - awkward place without many good routes, and a series of industrial/refinery economies that mostly want the same things (and not computer components).

Thank you for your thoughtful reply which truly added to my understanding of Elite Dangerous.

I don't know how many E : D gamma players there are but I'm guessing we must be placed in a relatively small area of the galaxy (maybe a 150LY radius?) and maybe that area is centered on Sol. I don't know if we're evenly distributed or certain systems (e.g. Eravate) are the seeds.
