Its good to see loads of people, regardless of their level of commitment wanting to start with only the basic starter package - Sidewinder and 100cr.

Do we know how many commanders / saves we have as I'd certainly want to take a peek at the 'secret world' but then get there off my own back from Lave... or a random location.

At least I would like to think so, but once I start playing then I dunno, might be tempted to continue

I guess you have to take the realistic view of; how long to gain the backers additional credits and ship upgrade starting from fresh against the time in your entire career playing Elite... negligible in my opinion if its anything compared to the original :D

Hmmmm still not 100% lol

I choose none of the above, because I will likely try each of them and then wander off doing something random...

I finished FE2 with a fully equipped Cobra MKIII, 140,000 cr on my account, the rank of Deadly. For me, Elite Dangerous is the continuation of my experience on FE2, not a beginning. I therefore largely deserves to continue my game in the world of the founder, with my usual Cobra MKIII (but less equipped), and 4000 cr in my account, and the rank of mostly harmless. I feel myself quite comfortable in this reasoning

;)

Am not sure if its official but have heard three Commanders so a few options to be had.

and yes we should make it a Cambridge Elite Dangerous Round table, but you can wear the pink carnations, am wearing a gimp mask...err Imperial logo on my coat! :p

Source? Not that I doubt what you heard but I'd like to follow it up and see if it goes back to FD at any point.

Assuming it's true, I have already dedicated one slot to my reserved name Cmdr, who will mercenary for the Federal Military. The 2nd will probably be an independent explorer (maybe starting with a long-range package from my pledge options), and my third will be an imperial combateer (though whether this is as a bounty-hunter, assassin or pirate I've yet to decide).

The more save slots, the more starting options I can try.

I am torn between starting on the edge of explored space with a long range version of the Cobra Mk III, or with a basic Sidewinder as default start and work my way up from there. I picked Explorer, but my mind could change after Alpha and Beta.

Yeah, it does ;) ...

Hello Private Backers!

Your flurry of activity has indeed, worked! Here's our current thinking. Remember of course, that all usual caveats apply; this is not set in stone - we might change our mind.

So, current thinking is to have a small number of characters available per account. Say perhaps three normal characters. These can be "normal" commanders or "perma-death" commanders. Only one could ever be active "in-game" at a time and there would be no concept of links between them (so no shared stash, or reputation ties or any such stuff).

Our reasoning so far is as follows:

* More than one person can have a commander, so family members can get in on the act (of course, to play at the same time you'd need two accounts, but this is still - I think - a benefit. Personally I like to think that multiple commanders allows additional players to dip their toes and hopefully progress into obtaining additional accounts.)

* Player choices in-game can be more about the specific commander, reducing the worry that a bad call will ruin everything achieved so far. This is actually quite important; I want to train people away from the idea that there are "right" and "wrong" ways to play Elite: Dangerous. There are just choices and consequences, and we're trying to ensure that all lead to more fun. I want to remove barriers to player experimentation, whilst retaining consequence; I think multiple commanders helps this cause.

* Any potential exploits for multiple commanders almost certainly exists the the multiple account level as well, so limiting an account to one commander would not save us the time and effort of guarding against multiple commander exploits.

* Any serious player infractions (exploits and cheating, player abuse etc.) would always be dealt with on an account basis rather than at the commander level.

* Multiple commanders allow a player to have multiple roleplay options available at the same time, which could be very useful (e.g. I have a scoundrel pirate and a legit trader available depending on my mood, which friends are online etc.)

* I don't find the terms "main", "alt" or "toon" particularly useful in what we are creating. Whilst at a basic level you could certainly argue that the commander with the best current gear/most money/best contacts is your "main" there are no levels - that money can be lost, the gear can be broken, powerful friends can become deadly enemies.

Now this is not to say that we are casually dismissing potential dangers of multiple commanders. We are and always will be on the look out for exploits and activity that undermines the experience (the "cheapening" effect is a valid concern we have considered). But at the moment, we feel a more compelling argument can be made for multiple commanders.

I hope this gives a clear enough picture of our intentions as they stand currently.

I going start at the founders world and test several ships and go in any direction from there.:D

Second i think be a trader and see how big a ship i can get my hands on.

Third i be a imperial Bounty hunter / imperial pirate whit a marque letter and enter federation Space to play a lil jolly rogue type of avatar like the anime bobalicous Space pirates. :p

I pledged for the Premium Box so I have plenty of options.
I'm very tempted by the Independent Trader starting deal - 100cr, Lave, Cobra Mk III - simply because that will give me the biggest nostalgia hit - it being the original game's starting conditions.
But, as others have said, I'd also rather like to start with just a Sidewinder and 100cr as it gives the most scope for progress.
So, this basic Sidewinder/100cr deal - which I assume is the default starting option - what planet will it start from?
I really want to start at Lave!

Really tempting to start with a Cobra at the edges of known space, but I'll force myself to start with a Sidewinder at a random location and 100 creds.

I can not decide. That from the two - independent trader or explorer. In favor of first - a tradition in favor of the second desire to be near of unexplored region.

By the way for those who doubt. In one or two jumps from Lave is Tionisla solar system. There must be large ship graveyard!

I could only choose one so I chose the Explorer. That is me in real life, of going seeing things etc.

But the Trader also appeals.

I will most likely start of in the KS Special area and then Explore from there.
