Holy cow, you are right... that IS idiotic! 4x very rare materials for a handfull of chaff?
Sometimes you wonder if FDev has too many interns doing things they don't understand and/or don't care - unchecked, no less...

A game world people would like to keep playing in, should not have in-game mechanics be a complete rip-off, by measure of the time players had to spend to source something. If all the trades with NPCs or basic game mechanics are a rip-off, it disgruntles people and makes them more likely to hop onto another game as soon as the opportunity presents itself with some new game release.

You can, apparently, upgrade a starship's power-plant or thrusters with a lump of sulphur and upgrade it's weapons with a lump of iron but manufacturing aluminium foil takes all sorts of rare and precious materials.
