Newcomer / Intro Where did my scanner go?

Hey guys, new player here.

Struggling with lack of direction in missions etc but slowly getting there I think.

Anyhoo, I bought a kill bounty scanner for around 40K and fitted it to the utility slot in my eagle, then later bought a shield generator thing and fitted that thinking I could switch between the two. When I re-docked, I went to fit the scanner but it's nowhere to be found. Where did it go?

When you swap it out, you effectively sell it... the only bright side to that is that you get your full purchase price refunded... and all the starter sidewinder stuff's really just on loan. The kill warrant scanner's not that expensive though.


But it may not be available at the station you're in.

I "lost" my scanner for a few jumps, and just figured out where I went wrong! I found a page in the wiki that explained it. I was wondering why when I dropped in on a new system that was unexplored, I wasn't getting the option to scan it. I mistakenly replaced my "discovery scanner" when I upgraded it to a detailed surface scanner!

But you need BOTH for this to work! you have to keep your discover scanner, and you enhance what you can discover by ALSO purchasing a surface scanner. So once I dumped one of my other upgrades and bought a discover scanner, I was back in business!

If I'm not making any sense then look in the elite dangerous wiki. I hope I'm not the only commander that made that mistake! It's cost me a few credits, before I figured it out.
