Where do crew go when I change ship?

So if I have a crew member in a ship say a Keelback, then I jump into one of my ships that doesn't support multi-crew like my ASP X.... does that crew member just sit about waiting in the Keelback? Does he/she still take a percentage of profits made when I am NOT using the ship they are aboard?

They go into a waiting room and still take a cut. Memory bits gotta eat too, ya know.

The crew only exist as pictures and text, so.... they just go off of your screen and come back later.
