where do I get stolen water purifiers?

As the mission implies.... you have to steal them .i.e. find some hauling them, interdict him / her and steal them.

Buy them at a station. Then abandon them into space and have a friend scoop them up. Then have your friend dump (not abandon) them so you can scoop them up as stolen.

Optional: Hit the 20 item limit because your friend was mining at the time and thus find that some of them despawned before you could collect them all.

Or: wait for a different naval mission to spawn.

Interdict and take a cargo scanner with you , even if you cant find it you prolly have other stuff pirated wich you can sell for a nice profit.

Need some help...

Hey guys i have just received a naval mission to get me to the rank of lord, but there is a problem it requires me to find stolen items so how can i find them?

I've had it a couple of times while checking out Unknown Signal Sources on my way to stations as I'm coming in to a system. Just a bunch of canisters floating around in space. I hadn't picked up any missions specifying stolen cargo but I do remember seeing them on the Bulletin Board of the last station I had been docked at. My advice would be to check out a few USS in the system or don your Pirate's Hat and get out there and steal some yourself!

Check out "LOW" energy signal sources in Super cruise

They normal have cargo mixed in with some hull fragments that once scooped are illegal and count to the mission
Problem Is finding Exactly what you need

option 2 Cargo scan freighters find what you want and target the cargo hatch ! so they drop what's needed.

Option 3: Get a mate to buy some and eject it so you can scoop it up.

Yeah, a naff work around, but the mechanic is naff. No problem with a mechanic that forces you to scan ships and pirate them, but make sure that is the only mechanic to get the stuff (i.e. don;t do it with normal commodities). Why would anyone want stolen water purifiers (or any of the other commodities on all the other similar threads?) ) .

Weak Signal Sources can have canisters floating around due to ships being destroyed so you may find what you are looking for there and once the cargo os scooped, since it wasn't yours, it is tagged as stolen.
Alternatively find a station that sells that cargo and scan each ship as it leaves, wait for it to jump and then scan the wake in order to follow it and once you are in the same system, safely away from the no fire zone, you can interdict them and get them to drop their cargo or blow up the cargo hatch using a limpet if they don't and then scoop up the cargo.
Or if it is a minable commodity then go to the source and attack a miner with a limpet to open the cargo hatch and take the goods required as it is being mined.

When you have one of these missions, do wss or uss mysteriously start spawning suitable contents like they do when you have a black box mission, ir2is it really like looking for a needle in a haystack?

Never accept those missions! If you're getting a rank offer, then you've already met the requirement; wait for the next offer. An easy offer will always come along very soon (deliver something, go pick up a canister from a wreck, etc.).

You will find what you're looking for by dropping into weak-signal-sources, although it may take a few instances before you find the cargo you're looking for.

These missions are silly. As others say, why would someone specifically want stolen goods? They should redo them as "$RandomName has run off with our $Commodity. Chase him down and bring back $Quantity and we'll give you $Reward for your time." So along the lines of an assassination mission, except you pirate them for their cargo, rather than just blow them up.

Have you accepted the mission yet?

If not they are easier to complete (if you want to do it at all) from an outpost - because the outpost won't have security ships to scan you on your return.
