Newcomer / Intro Where do I put the fuel scoop?

Flying a mostly stock sidewinder, and the only place that seems to fit the fuel scoop is my cargo bay.

Is it supposed to work like this or am I missing something, since I don't like flying around without a cargo bay.

The scoop needs to go in a spare internal slot somewhere. You could sacrifice the Scanner if you are not exploring.

tbh though I installed a scoop in my Cobra, but the time and effort it takes to scoop fuel cost more than I would simply make running the cargo without the delay. I ditched it after a couple of days. For longer runs maybe worth it, but especially in the Sidey fuel is pretty cheap and not worth the cost of the scoop.

There's a thread around here somewhere with a good guide on using scoops effectively. Was a lot easier in the original Elite versions and you need a bit of skill now to deploy consistently.

if you look up and down the list of modules you will see there are several of a type "internal compartment"

the cargo bay and the discovery scanner will both be internal compartments

those are your flexible slots you can put many different things in.

personally i'd swap the discovery scanner out for a fuel scoop

after having to scuttle a ship due to running out of fuel i like to have a scoop for any trips i've not done before. also check out the higher class and higher rank scoops. the E1 is horrible at scooping, though it's better than running out. an A2 on the other hand sees me dipping into stars far more often in my ASP or Type 6

as you say, on a known trade route where you run no risk of running out of fuel then more cargo would be better as fuel for most ships is cheap. i understand something the size of a python is the tipping point where scooping becomes worth the time

So in other words the sidewinder is not the best choise for exploring? Don't want to swap any of my moduels for fuel scoop. So grinding for a better ship...

That's the spirit!
Working your way up through the ships and learning new skills along the way is what makes you appreciate it when you can afford that shinny new ASP that can jump 30 + LY in a single bound...

It would be advisable to not "stick it where the sun don't shine" because that is not how a fuel scoop works.

I did a fair bit of exploring fairly early in my career (after I'd been dumped in fed space at the start) in a sidewinder with a fuel scoop. Made it to the rank of scout in fact. It was pretty easy and I made a few credits. What you have to remember is once you have fitted a fuel scoop your running costs are practically nil (other than repairs if you get damaged in a scrap and the wear and tear). So as long as you aren't expecting to make millions you can do a bit of basic exploration although if you want to go more in depth and further out then a bigger ship (Asp) would be far better!
.
Edit: It's Oss133! I haven't seen a post from you in ages, oh how I've missed you.....

The small ships are not very versatile. They simply don't have room to do more than one thing. You want exploring, drop the cargo. You want trade, drop the scanner. You really want trade, drop the shield generator. You get the idea.

Being able to carry a wider range of equipment is basically what the bigger ships are about. The first time you get into a Cobra, you feel like there's no limit to what you can do.

Then you realize that you can't equip that baby to explore / bounty hunt / trade / mine at the same time, and while you can certainly equip for two or even three of those, you start eying those extra slots on the Asp with some longing...

;-)

As for deep space exploring in a Sidey... you still only have three or four jumps in that fuel tank, and not all the stars out there can be scooped, so pay attention to your fuel levels and the distance to the next "known good" refuelling opportunity. Getting stranded out there isn't fun. ;-)

Figures, but its all fair. Doing a little of each now. Cant lose scanner or cargo for fuel scoop... so have to stay local. But i have some 10k of exploration data i have to sell soon. Little 20Ly adventure ahead.

Yours,
HC

Thx to OP for getting the question out.

basically you can use any internal slot so i put mine in the second largest one i have on a larger ship it a 5 size and i can scoop a whole tank for my clipper in les than a half star orbit!

but i agree the basic small ones are not worth it unless your sure you might run out altogether as that will result in having to self destruct
