Where do I want to mine?

Ok, I gather I'm supposed to find pristine metallic planetary rings, but I have no idea where to find them. I did find a thread with a lengthy list of systems, but it's rather difficult to know where those systems are relative to where I am.

So, I'm in the Frey system, but I tend to operate somewhere near Sol (in the likely vain hope that they will allow us to visit the system without need of a permit, which inexplicably requires military service). So, is there a good place to mine near there?

Don't worry about Sol, if you really want to go there find Fed stations and start giving to charity at them, you only need low level rank to get a permit.

So just go to that list and put the system name into the galaxy map until you find one near you. Avoid RES areas when you get to the ring and try and only mine roids with 20% + of high value metals and painite. Values go up in order Silver, Osmium, Gold, Palladium, Platinum and Painite.

Really doubt they'll change the permit on Sol anytime soon so either start doing fed mission until you get a mission to rank up or forget a trip to Sol.

Yeah, I had been putting the systems into my galaxy map, but the process is taking for bloody ever, so I thought I'd just ask if anyone knew of a good system near my location.

The thing that bugs me about not being able to visit Sol is that it's described as a TOURIST economy. What kind of tourism can they have when they won't let anyone come into the system?! Also, I'm aggravated at being forced to be in the military to go there. I very carefully and specifically pursue non-military missions and activities. I specifically do not want to be in the military, and I suspect there are others of a like mind. All of us are being prevented from visiting what might be the one system many of us most want to see, and for no real reason I can fathom. It's just frustrating.

Some pristine metallic rings here... http://m.imgur.com/a/vEqgv#

Use the galaxy map on the navigation tab and type in the name of the systems until you find the ones closest to you. Try out all the sites within 100ly - they do vary in quality, local resources and some are a long way from the system entry point. Take a scanner so you can do a system scan for yourself on the first visit.

Above list was put together by some helpful folk, it is far from complete so you may well come across others.

ED is a complex, slow-burn game, it requires patience to learn and get the most out of it.

Ranking up in Federation isn't really being, 'in the military,' since you are doing missions that the real military aren't legally allowed to do. That might alter your role play prospective?

Look for rings around planets. Only mine pristine metallic rings (they have the best stuff and a lot of it). Avoid RES sites if you want to mine alone. You can mine in every part of the ring. Res sites have bonus to fragments you get (low<high<haz) but there is a lot npc traffic. I haven´t seen any pristine metallic rings near Sol, so go look for less populated areas of the bubble.

Don't worry I just started giving to local charities (in Fed station - not a plan just something I was doing anyway) that and doing some missions, nothing nasty, just deliveries or kill pirate missions (although if totally peaceful you might not want these either). At some point I noticed there was a bunch of Naval missions. Some of these were kill X but some were just deliver this item to this station. I took one of the later as it seemed like a slightly different mission. It wasn't but I was made a petty officer!

Didn't even realise I'd got the permit till a few days later - shows you how observant I am!

So you shouldn't have to sully your hands with anything like military action to get the rank, just do a normal delivery mission and get an honorary title for the effort.

There's a Elite mining app available for android and iSheep devices, its free and will tell you good sites to go near to where you are.

If you are a Fed players I'll happily share my groups mining location and tips in a PM :-D not helping any alliance or empire scum though.

Go to here : http://www.hozbase.co.uk/EliteDangerous/

Type in your current system and then it will show you the nearest pristine systems, double check with the galaxy map to ensure that they have not changed,:)

This. I have also found the best place to mine while upgrading your ship is to go to GCRV 1568 (AB1) close to Lembava and Diaguandri. The system itself has a station orbiting the ring (fast to sell off metals and minerals) and when you have the money you can go to Lembava and Diaguandri to upgrade your mining equipment with a 15% discount.
