Newcomer / Intro Where Do You Find Limpets?

Hey Folks:

I appreciate the help today. I'm really feeling like a total noob, but you guys have provided great answers.

Where do you get Limpets? It seems a very simple question which Google has not helped with, nor any of the guides I've been able to find here.

I've set up a Hauler as an initial mining ship. It's not great, but it nearly won't work without Limpets.

I've managed to fit out the Hauler with a 1C Prospector Limpet Controller and a 1B Controller Limpet Controller.

Now, I have NO IDEA where to get these Limpets to fill up the controllers. The older documentation that I've been able to find seems to indicate that Limpets are ammunition for the controllers, which makes sense, but then they mention something about a "munitions bay" which I cannot find.

The closest I've come is to go to Advanced Maint. and then go to Restock. There I see the following table:

Module Ammo Unit Cost Cost
Limpets Cargo
Limpet Controller 0/0 101 Cr

The only thing I can do here is select the Limpet Controller, but this gives me a Cancel button and a red Confirm button which I cannot press.

I am doing something fundamentally wrong, but I don't know what.

You are nearly there :)
Do as you have done then you need to press what ever key you have to move right in the menus, this will add the number of limpets you want to buy. Then press confirm.

Rats! Doesn't seem to work. I go to the

Limpet Controller 0/0 101Cr

line and hit "right" on the D-Pad (PS4), R1 and R2 and it clicks, but does nothing.

By the way OP, I have over 2,000 hours in the game and when they moved the limpet purchasing to its current location it took me five minutes to work out where it had gone. It's easily one of the least intuitive things I have ever seen in a game. As Wyaston Hypatia says above, the line you're on is actually the purchase line - right to add, left to decrease, then confirm to actually buy the little beggars.

Do you have cargo space available? They sit in your hold like cargo when you buy them rather than being self-contained within the controller like weapon ammo.

Oh and don't worry about sounding like a noob when you ask stuff mate. Firstly you are a noob :p but more importantly we all were once.

Yep, I have an empty 8T cargo bay.

Hmmmm. This is probably where I need to bow out then, just because I'm a PC player and I suspect the issue is something related to the PS4 interface. I don't want to tell you to press something and then you come back and tell me you've just dropped some mines in the station or something :D

It sounds like it's going to be as obvious as pressing something else when you're on the line first to enable it and then following Wyaston's instructions but I'll cross my fingers for you that an actual PS4 player comes along soon. Fly safe Commander.

Edit: I will throw in one hopefully useful fact about limpets that you might or might not have discovered already though, mainly as an attempt to offset my guilt at being hopelessly ill-equipped to help with your problem. Assuming these are collectors we're talking about, you can use them in two ways. If you target the object you want a limpet to collect and then fire one off, it will collect the item, bring it to your cargo bay and then self-destruct. If you don't target an object but just fire a limpet off, it will collect everything in range one item at a time and bring all of them to your cargo bay (assuming you have room) and will then helpfully follow your ship around collecting anything else that comes within range until it expires.

Probably not that much of an issue in a Hauler with only 8 tons of space but when you get into a larger ship it does mean you don't have to carry 100 limpets around just to collect 100 things.

Odd, the 0/0 would seem to suggest you do not have any cargo space. You have a 8T cargo rack fitted, yes? Not just a refinery.

Personally I'd not bother with a collector limpet controller and scoop manuals if I was in a hauler (but that just me ;))

You know, if I had to guess I'd say the same thing. Why I say that was that I was trying to get Limpets bought with a friend who has a PC. We couldn't figure it out with him, either, but now I know more.

In his case the line was:

Limpet Controller 0/4 101Cr

I don't exactly remember the size of cargo he had.

I just rebooted the whole PS4. No change in the "Limpet Controller 0/0 101Cr." Still 0/0. No way that I can tell of getting Limpets. When I go to the line and press Right on the DPad it does click, at least. When I press any other right control (R1 or R2) it doesn't even click.

I'm becoming more convinced of that, yes.

I've started another thread on the PS4 specific forum.

Aaaaaaand...problem solved!

My cargo bay was filled with 8T of nano-something. I just created this ship 3 hours ago. I have spent the entire time either on the forums here (talking to you guys. THANK YOU! :) ) or travelling from station to station trying to find these things. So, I have no idea how the damn things got there! :)

I went so far as to try to delete the cargo bay. It wouldn't get me. I finally ended up googling THAT error message, which finally led me to my inventory tab to reveal that I had 8T of nano-somethings in the hold. Got rid of those and getting limpets started working as described!

THANKS, FOLKS! You were great!!

You got the nanothingies as mission rewards.

You can always tell what you can load as the number shown I believe is x amount of y possible capacity (x/y).

You will see something similar in your HUD as you deploy collector limpets and prospector limpets.

Just checked back to see if you got it sorted, glad that you did. As MalcYorks says above the nanothingies would be commodity rewards from missons you ran which are stealthily deposited into your cargo hold when you turn the mission in, hence why you didn't remember them getting there.

If they were collected from missions in your previous ship, the game will let you buy another ship as long as it has enough cargo space to hold whatever was in your old ship, it just gets transferred across automatically when you buy the new ship so you wouldn't have noticed.

Happens to me all the time actually when I'm in outfitting, I go to sell a cargo rack to equip simething else, get the message saying I can't sell the rack because it's in use, check inventory and find 24 random bits of stuff in there from missons that I'd forgotten about. :D

I often find random bits of junk in my holds from just that effect. I usually just sell them as soon as I find them but have a lingering feeling of guilt as I do so. Not having moved into the world of engineers yet, I vaguely worry that I am disposing of something that might be useful and possibly hard to come by. On the other hand those "nanothingies" are taking up space that I require here and now for other purposes.

Nice avatar, by the way. I wonder how many people who see your posts understand it.

The commodity requirements for engineering were removed some time back. Rest assured that you can sell/dump nanothingies, CMM composites etc. with no fear of remorse.

Modular terminals are still required to access one engineer (Palin) but inmy opinion they aren't worth hauling around until you actually need them.

You can determine which stations sell limpets by the shape of the station. The stations with the "mail slot door" (called Coriolis, Orbis and Ocellus) sell limpets.

You can identify these stations on the system map (only accessible if you discovered the system) by the SHAPE of the icon. The icons with the slot in it (except the upside down "triangle" which is a megaship, not a station) are certain to sell limpets. (See Coriolis, Orbis and Ocellus icons in the attached picture) The "gun-shaped"ones (outposts) may or may not.

You will find limpets under "advanced maintenance", select "restock" and you can select the number of limpets you want to buy. Note: you can only buy limpets if you have the limpet control modules outfitted to your ship. Also, you need some empty cargo space or you won't be able to buy any.

I wish my concise, informative answer above Para Handy's was available when I first googled this question because I was wasting all this time super-cruising to outposts/ hubs/whatnot that didn't have limpets and I was googling how to determine what places sell limpets. No thanks to this thread (or the internet) I figured out on my own (through trial and error) that you can identify limpet sellers on the system map by icons ( the Coriolis, Orbis and Ocellus type "mail slot" door stations). I also succinctly outlined how to buy limpets in those specific stations under "advanced maintenance>Restock>select number of limits" and that you need limpet controller modules outfitted first.

Everyone else on the internet was just barking "Advanced maintenance" over and over. It's a good answer, but NOT when it's in a place that doesn't sell limpets.

It's about the WHERE as well as the HOW.

Also, Bible verses about witches and wizards don't help.

I wish your post resurrecting a thread over 3 years old was really accurate but I only offered a mild tease about necromancy. Shame you took it so hard.

Your 'The "gun-shaped"ones (outposts) do not' - is rather misleading - it would be more accurate to say that they may not.

How about considering surface ports?

To be honest, if you feel it warrants it, surely a new thread giving guidance to newcomers would be more useful than tagging-it-on to the end of a 3 year old one?

P.S. If you don't like people teasing or joking then do make sure you avoid the dangerous discussions forum. ;)
