"Where have all the Abnormal Compact Emissions Data gone?" I tried Isinor.

Like, I suspect, a great many players, I've been taking advantage of the new per-item storage in 3.0 to stockpile mats, especially top grade mats.

At first I found no particular difficulty in acquiring Abnormal Compact Emission Data: while looking for other G5 mats in High Grade Emissions USSs I checked Encoded Emissions USSs as well, and obtained several ACED drops from scanning the data beacons these often contain. ACEDs weren't common, but they were there. (They also showed up occasionally in random ship scans.)

Since 3.0.3, however, Encoded Emissions USSs no longer drop me any ACEDs. Plus, since 3.0.3 I've had only one drop from random ship scanning.

Based on the number of "Where are the ACEDs?" threads I've seen, I've not been alone in finding them MIA.

I tried ship scanning in HazRESs and CZs, but in 6 hrs 9 mins of scanning 1083 ships in these sources (three sessions in 3.0.3, one in 3.0.4) I obtained precisely one drop (three items) of ACED. Not the most productive use of my time.

There is, of course, one other famous source of ACEDs: the Convoy Beacon at Isinor. So I obtained the permit you need to go to Isinor, and took myself to the Convoy Beacon (by this time we were at 3.0.5).

For those who don't know, the Convoy Beacon (a permanent POI) at the planet Maodun in Isinor system contains two Anacondas and a T-9. This is especially handy since ACEDs are said only to drop from ship scans when scanning Anacondas.

The drill is to scan all three ships (the T-9s also drop mats, though not ACEDs), then either relog or else supercruise out of the instance and immediately drop back in (my preferred method).

Here's some data from my visit to Isinor:

Total time spent: 71 min
Total Convoy Beacon instances entered: 73

Encoded materials dropped:

Wake Scans, Encrypted Files, Encoded Firmware: none.

Emission Data:

1 No Grade 1-4 Emissions Data
2
3
4
5 Abnormal Compact Emission Data 15

Shield Data:

1 Distorted Shield Cycle Recordings 60
2 Inconsistent Shield Soak Analysis 33
3 Untypical Shield Scans 39
4
5 No grade 4 or 5 shield data.

Data Archives

1 No Grade 1-3 Data Archives
2
3
4 Divergent Scan Data 21
5 Classified Scan Fragments 24

Conclusions:

In 71 minutes I obtained 39 Grade 5 items - 13 drops. That's 11 drops/hr, which isn't bad for Grade 5.

However, ACEDs drop at less than 5 drops/hr. The ratio between ACED drops and CSF drops is roughly 2:3. By I suspect no great coincidence, CSF drops from all three ships, whereas ACED drops only from the two Anacondas.

So is the drop rate for ACEDs acceptable? You'll have to make up your own mind on that.

For comparison, Datamined Wake Exceptions in Famine Distribution Centres have in my experience always dropped at about 5 drops/hr, and that's generally been regarded as the preferred option for obtaining those Grade 5 mats. On the other hand, I've scored as many as 21 drops/hr gathering Grade 5 mats in HGE USSs.

However, at Isinor ACEDs are at least obtainable, if not abundant.

Fair warning: this is easily the most mind-numbing thing I've ever done in ED. I came away thinking that I'd been through more than 90 instances and had spent the thick end of two hours doing it. It was only when I totted things up in EDDiscovey afterwards that the true figures emerged.

Freshly obtained from a Encoded USS today.

I got a few the other day by just constantly stacking up Elite-level data courier missions, then stalling on completing the ones which had Anacondas generated until I'd got the lot - got a couple of ACEDs off them, plus a bunch of G5 manufactured materials. If I'd been intending specifically to get ACEDs I might have optimised the approach a bit.

It's not fast - if you need tens of ACEDs you'll probably take days or weeks of this to get them - but all I need them for is the occasional long-range KWS or DSS, which in theory you can get by with just one of each of anyway, so it's a more interesting approach than specifically farming them. If you want long-range sensors on an entire fleet ... it's going to take a while doing it that way.

Interesting. Yes, I've seen a lot of Anacondas chasing me during such missions. But my ships fly unarmed, so I'm usually too busy showing them my backside to get a scan. Would you say say that your drop rate for ACEDs was significantly better than the one drop in slightly less than thirty Anacondas scanned that I was getting at Isinor?

I met 10 hostile Anacondas that day, didn't scan all of them (a couple of them either interdicted from an angle I couldn't scan them, or dropped in to an existing fight and opened fire before I could scan them) and got two ACEDs.

So that suggests a much better drop rate per Anaconda than Isinor - but it's a very small sample size and I might just have got lucky. It also takes a lot longer between Anacondas, of course.

It's the Goddam Loch Ness Monster! .. It took my Tree Fiddy and then went on to taking Abnormal Compact Emissions .. Goddam Loch Ness Monster!

All I can say is, I've been in a lot of Encoded Emissions USSs since 3.0.3 dropped, and RNGesus hasn't been nearly so kind to me.

Since 3.0 came out I believe that a Wake Scanner is now Mandatory on any ship in the game. The Data Material you seek is also often provided by scanning High FSD Wakes of departing ships around Starports, Outposts and even Planetary Bases. You can also get them from randomly scanning ships in SuperCruise while you are flying around.

Datamined Wake Exceptions are also a hard to find G5 mat that is often spawned from scanned wakes. Several other types as well.

So in addition to the Encoded Emissions USS mentioned previously, I would also recommend you stick a wake scanner on your ship and start using it. G5 upgrade it with the Fast Scan upgrade, and you can scan a wake in less than 3 seconds! Not exaggerating! It is literally 2.5 seconds with the G5 fast scan upgrade. :D

Great. I've been grinding for the Isinor permit this evening for this very reason. (Thought I already had it but it turns out that's on my other account). If the drop rate is this low at the convoy I might as well go back to Encoded USS and use the data trader to exchange for other rares. I only need four or five for the last few rolls on a G5 KWS (or is it long-range scanner? One of those two). Probably won't make a jot of difference in gameplay but my completist nature won't let me leave those circles unfinished.

All of these drop tables need a rebalance. I know some of this stuff is supposed to be rare but damn - six hours of effort for a slack handful of data. That's more punishing than the new C&P. ;)

(edited to strike misinterpreted number)

Just to be clear: the six hours was in HazRESs and CZs. I spent just over an hour at Isinor and got five drops of ACED and eight drops of CSF. It wasn't my most exciting time in ED but as Grade 5 drop rates go, it's not appalling.

AFAIK, you'll only get wake data from using a wake scanner. Though if you scan the ships before they make the wakes, you may get other data as well. But it's not the wake scanner producing that; it's just the standard ship scan ability of your scanner.

I had good luck and got 12 ACED drops (36 mats) in 90 minutes. Scan all three vessels; at least 3 of the ACED drops were from the Type 9.

Cheers. Read it twice and still misinterpreted. No excuse except tiredness after two hours of hunting pirates for a reputation mission. I'll amend the post.

That sounds more promising.

Not more than scanning Distribution Centers for DWE or deliberately searching for HGEs imo.
I fail to consider repetitive tasks like those as engaging gameplay, too, so my usual approach is not to rush anything, just play along and the mats keep piling up anyway.
However, reading this I thought I might take this as an opportunity to get the Isinor permit and spend an hour at the convoy beacon in order to augment your statistics pool a little.
Here's my outcome:

time spent: 60 min
convoy beacon instances entered: 80 (80 T9 scans / 160 Anaconda scans)

distorted shield cycle recording: 28 drops (=84)
inconsistent shield soak analysis: 11 drops (=33)
untypical shield scans: 9 drops (=27)
divergent scan data: 8 drops (=24)
classified scan fragment: 5 drops (=15)
abnormal compact emission data: 5 drops (=15)

It's worth noting that after 55 rounds I had only 1 drop of ACED, then I got 4 drops of ACED within 6 rounds...

No, I think it's actually worse. At least when scanning for DWEs or searching for HGEs you're flying your ship just slightly differently on each search. At the Convoy Beacon you're doing exactly the same thing over and over and over and ... after a while you just wish the Anacondas would start shooting ... you wouldn't shoot back....

Thanks for the data. More is always better!

Got my Isinor permit the other night in the hope I could get some data drops from the convoy beacon, dropped in about 5 or 6 times and got absolutely nothing!! Zero!!
