Where is everyone?

I bought the game shortly after its official release and I've been enjoying it immensely. One thing's been perplexing me though, I very rarely seem to come across actual human players (and before anyone asks yes, I'm in Open Play =D ). I don't think I've run across another living soul the last 5 or 6 times I've logged in to play, is this something of a common occurrence with how immense the galaxy is?

From what I remember I'm in the vicinity of LHS 3447.

I saw loads of players in LHS 3447 the other day - I guess they've all spread out a bit by now - plus it's Christmas Eve - Pub time for many.

And the game is huge - I see maybe 2 or 3 players per 2 hour session I guess typically.

I´m very new to the game so sorry about the stupid question: How do I distinguish between NPC and actual human players?

NPC are solid, Commanders are hollow on your scanner.

Human players display as hollow icons in the scanner (arrow icon means weapons deployed, you´ve been warned ;-) and cmdr before their names in the target tab

i have not seen a human player in weeks, since before the gamma stage. noone is about even in the usual places like i bootis etc. Still loving the game though :)
