So Ive been playing a for a couple days now and I got a pretty decent grasp on the game. Just one thing I can't seem to figure out. Where the hell are the major factions other than the federation. As far as I can tell they aren't shown on my map at all. After looking for a bit I found one empire system but that's it. Do I need to go explore past where my map gives me information to find them?

Newcomer / Intro Where is the Alliance/Empire?

just type in achenar , its all reds there.
On the galactic map under view (I think) uncheck all the faction boxes except for the one you want to see and you'll see the systems that belong to each faction.
When looking from the "top" of the galaxy, it appears the Alliance is above the Federation and the Empire is below the Federation. As natte hond mentioned, typing Achenar into the navigation tab will zoom the map to the Empire. Type Alioth to zoom to the Alliance stars. Use the mouse scroll wheel to zoom out and you will see hundreds of them.
After my first day, I decided I wanted to join the Alliance. I bought a fuel scoop and took off for the nearest Alliance star. Seemed like about 20 jumps or so and I haven't seen another player since.

Be advised that although Sol, Alioth, and Achenar are the capitals of each major power, we may find that most of the "action" is going to be on the fringes and where the powers overlap. Keep an eye on the news in Station Services to see what systems are making headlines, too.
