Darnielle's Progress isn't on a high-g world. You're thinking of Ceres Tarn in HR 1185.
Isn't Merope slightly closer than Maia? Only by a couple of LY, but there are Barnacle sites on 2a and 5c, don't have the co-ords to hand and I'd suggest checking out the *excellent* "Ripe Meta-Alloy Barnacles" thread maintained by CMDR PanPiper, guy deserves a medal never mind +Rep lol!
It seems a lot of Thargoid Barnacles go through cycles of being 'ripe' with M-A's for a couple of weeks and then 'empty' for a while, and he's extensively tested/tracked these to work out a schedule, as well as continually being on the lookout for new ones to add. Edit: Further, I recall going to a Thargoid Base in HIP 18909 a little while back for a CG where we had to supply Thargoid Organic Circuitry/Ship Signatures/etc. etc. by blowing up Scavengers in my SRV (great fun lol!), but I can't remember what planet and I'm not in-game currently to search the GalMap (taking a mini-break!), can someone help the good CMDR out? I was picking up a few Meta-Alloys there too so I was earning money when I got back with the stuff, not to mention preventing any UA bombing of the station.... also, the Scavengers dropped Unknown Fragements (now Thargoid Sensor Fragments), 25 of which are required to unlock Palin after you've done your 5kly trip out. GLHF!
