Newcomer / Intro Where is the station?

Sorry to be a pain, but I had a quick gander through the threads and can see more about docking than my problem. I took a mission to deliver some aluminium to a neighbouring system. I flew there, had to go via another system because of the distance. Got my system map up to find which planet it was next to. Head in that direction, found a marker that was supposedly the station. I approached it several times but nothing was there. Then I was interdicted, fought bravely and two local security ships turned up and saved my bottom.

I had to bug out to the second system and return to the third where the station was supposedly located. This time I super cruised to the station. Had a look on youtube to see if I was doing anything wrong. It said I should keep my speed in the blue marker section as I got closer and reduce my speed to zero as I got real close. I cannot, for some reason, reduce my speed to less than 30 KMH, but I am in the vicinity. Only, again no station. What on earth am I doing wrong?

And to add too my frustration, even though I paused the game to search for answers and type this up, the game decided to start playing itself and I have been interdicted a second time.

1. Not sure what you mean by "marker that was supposedly the station" - stations are on your navigation pane, you can just lock the one you need and fly to it.
2. There's no pause in online games, that entry in the menu is in serious need of renaming.

As I enter the system there are numerous unmarked items, so I fly around targeting things. Eventually the name of the Station comes up on my screen. So I open up the panel that appears on the left hand side of the screen. Select the station name and super cruise to it. On my screen I can now see a three quarter circle with the stations name, distance etc. So I match speed with it, at least that is what I think I am doing by keep my speed in the blue section. This is exactly what I saw in the you tube clip. Only when I get there, the is no station. I can try and target it but nothing happens. How do you lock onto it? That might be what I need to know?

Everything you say sounds right, but you then have to drop out of supercruise when the blue text appears (when you get within 1mm (I think)). After that you should be local to the station.

When you get close to the station you have to drop out of Supercruise, with J. When you are close enough you will see blue writing just above your radar saying Safe Disengage Ready. (I think that's what it says!!!) Basically Have station selected, Supercruise to t, slow down as you get near, 30KM/s is the slowest you can go in Supercruise. and once your at that sort of speed, your distance to the station should be within 1000km hence the disengage. Distance will scroll down from Ls to MM to KM once your at the Mm distance ranges, technically you want to be in the km/s speed range on your ship.

It sounds like you aren't targeting the station just looking for the planet. If it isn't locked as your nav target you will not be able to drop out at it no matter how slow you go. 30kps is the slowest you can go in supercruise.
go to your left panel and find the station there, choose it and select Lock Destination.
as posted above once you get under 1000 km you can disengage. Your info panel will say Destination Lock Engaged and you will exit supercruise to real space nearby the station. (It will almost always be right in front of you)

Right I think I am doing everything right except dropping out of super cruise? I was hitting my slow down/reverse thruster button. Cheers everyone for your help.

Saul, it doesn't sound like you're doing it quite right. It's also possible that I misunderstand what you're saying though. When you jump into the star system, you can immediately look at the left UI pane and lock that station as destination - no need to fly around looking for it. When you get close to the station (distance less than 1 Mm), you will get a blue message above your radar saying "safe disengage". At that time you need to hit your supercruise key again ("C" by default) in order to drop from supercruise, then you will see the station.

I am aware that you can lock onto the station via the left hand panels, but where is the fun in that? I want to fly around the system and just have a bit of a play. My problem was I was forgetting to drop out of super cruise. It doesn't matter now, the station took umbrage at me landing on the wrong pad and blew my ship and cargo up. I'll be making sure I don't make that mistake again. Ooops ;), I tried to lift off but was just a little too slow.

You can just lock in the station you want to go to from the "Navigation" tab on the left side panel in your ship and it will lock on the the destination.

You can't alwasy see the station from supercruise. You only really see it when you drop out - otherwise it looks like a small dot you are approaching (at best). Some are very dark to black colored so can appear invisible until you drop out of cruise mode.

My "rule of thumb" for navihation is to get there until I'm about 100 or so ls out then start slowing quickly -watching the timer to station and trying to keep that at about 0:21 as I approach. 2 blue marked bars on your overview - one is your speed, the other distance. When *BOTH* are in the blue, you can safely drop out of supercruise and will *ALWAYS* (when done right) drop around 10km from the station to approach. Default key for that is the J key. If you overshoot, don't wory about it, just turn around and approach again. It adds about 30 seconds top to the trip if you weren't pulling a speed demon at it.

So watch your speed as you approach but watch that timer more than the speed until you get really close. It's more reliable than the speed being as planets, moons and such will 'drage" you slower but without them, you can't slow decently.

If you stay within the blue zone (displayed on the left side of your speed meter) it'll begin to slow down automatically and will then tell you when it's safe to exit SC, once you exist SC you'll be at the station.
