Where to best buy Elite Dangerous..?????

I am seeing Elite Dangerous on STEAM, on Amazon.com and it is probably available at my local games store. Any advice where to get it?

I didn't think that it would be available anywhere else but the Frontier store. Amazon will have the books but the only elite game on amazon that I saw was Eliteplus which is the 80s original version (a similar version can be had for free from the frontier store).

You are absolutely correct. After reading a forum write up on the game, I came straight here and asked the question. Then I went to STEAM...nope couldn't find it. Went to Amazon.com....hmmmm, only kindle versions and some joysticks but no game. Forget the dumb question......need to buy it here...

but, unlike a lot of new cmdr's you have already discovered some of the games fiction, so far there are 8 published books that all conform to the games Lore (this was overseen by Michael Brooks the games executive producer) and no book was released without obtaining approval from the company.

if you enjoy reading science fiction books as well as playing science fiction games i can recommend them, i've read 5 so far and loved every page ;)

what are the pros and cons of buying this game from Steam versus the frontier store?
where would you recommend that I purchase it

I don't have anything against Steam, but why have an extra layer of resource-consuming DRM if you don't have to? Plus, if you buy direct from Frontier Valve doesn't take a cut of the profit.

If you are buying elite first time buy from Steam because they have easy to use and fast refund policy for games bought from steam. 2 hours in game time or 14 days no question asked refund and this can be extended in some chases if you contact steam customer support. Frontier store is from what i have heard good with their return policy too, but i am not 100% about it. If you Buying from steam doesn't stop you buying from frontier store later. There is no difference for you as player if you buy from one or some other place. If you buy 2nd account by where you get the cheapest offer. But don't by from G2A as they allow selling stolen keys on their store and you should never buy from store that want you pay extra to make sure you get legal working key.

If you are on xbox you have only one option.

Oculus Store. Heck, I'd never even heard of the Elite franchise until I saw E:D there. Figured "Hmm, that's more expensive then these VR demo games, so it must be good." For once, I was right.

Holy necro...

Anyway steam has the social and keeping your games together. But the game is primarily developed for the Frontier store method of obtaining it and it'll allow you to do more if you want to edit graphics files etc. and steam adds an extra login layer.

I always say store, you can get a steam key if you want, but you can't do that in reverse.

The one good thing with buying on Steam is that updates are distributed by Steam directly, and the game files are updates by the Steam client rather than the Frontier launcher. I've had no end of troubles with Frontier's servers and the launcher, whereas Steam has been idiot-proof so far. Click update, get excellent speed, installation process goes without a hitch.. no "Failed to read from response stream" every other update, just a working update.

On the other hand Steam also forces you to install both the 32 and 64 bit versions of the game.

Based on my experience, Steam is preferable:

- Easier refund model
- Cheaper - at least Horizons was when I bought that
- Downloads are much faster - Guardians updates were, for me, consistently many 10s of times faster from Steam than from FD

Drawbacks of Steam:

- Extra level of complexity - I managed to have ED (from FD) and ED Horizons (from Steam) installed at the same time, and sorting out the installations, and messing about with keys so that the two delivery systems remain in sync, was a pain. Probably best to pick a delivery system and stick with it.
- ED installed in different location - often support or forum instructions refer to the FD install location, not the Steam install location
