Where to buy Odyssey

Hi all,

Thinking about buying Odyssey. I have always purchased my ED/EDH from the Frontier Store, however it's £30 on the store and CDKeys has it for £11 and Steam is quite cheap too. My question is where do I buy it from? If from CDKeys or Steam would this still work with my frontier store brought purchases? Or do I just stump up the money and buy it directly. I don't mind paying frontier store prices but CDKeys saving me £20 is enough for a dominos to nom whilst it downloads or some ARX's to spend in game.

Thanks

I don't know if this is a solution for you, but I bought ED/H/O from the Frontier store.

Since it came with a Steam CD Key, <<(Found in your Frontier store account), I let Steam install ED/H/O. When done, I then "Over-Installed" my Frontier store purchase of ED/H/O directly on top of the Steam install. The trick is making sure you install Frontier's store purchased copy and adjusting the install path to place the "EDLaunch.exe" file over the same directory path as Steam's EDLaunch.exe, over-writing it. Install Frontier's copy to "X:\Your_Games\steamapps\common\Elite Dangerous"

What this did is to allow me to use the Frontier's store's copy of the ED Launcher (short-cut on desktop) for ED/H/O instead of having to run the Steam Client before launching ED/H/O. It also allows me to maintain one copy of the game and allows me to use both Steam and/or Frontier's launcher to do the updates as well as "verifying files" of the game should there be a problem with an update.

Where you choose to buy the game is up to you. I doubt CDKeys will offer you any kind of software support long term, but the Frontier Store will. For me, cost is secondary. I want long term store support for the software I purchase. Frontier's store allows me to keep all my purchases in one place, with support for the purchases.

Also, Steam will give you two hours of play, including install time before a refund is impossible. Frontier's store does not have this restriction and may give a refund after a few days.

I've eaten a few game purchase from Steam because of their time limits.

So not naming any sites you could buy Odyssey cheaper but I choose to buy all my stuff through the Frontier store to support the company. If you buy anything through Steam then Valve take a percentage of the profit so always best to buy directly from Frontier.

There is some weird quirk where you can buy a steam key from steam and link it to FD account, as if you don't it screws with your FD account. I'm afraid I can't remember the details but hopefully someone will come along with the trick.

I am leery of retailers that just sell keys, so if it was me, I would stick with Steam, a long-time reliable retailer of PC gaming.

I purchased Elite & Horizons straight from the Frontier store - that was my only copy until last year when Epic gave away the base game for free and I took advantage of the deal for a second copy. But then Steam had a sale on Odyssey, so I needed to get a Steam copy as well. :) Fortunately, if you go to your account page for the Frontier store, Frontier helpfully gives a free key to unlock a Steam version of the game. So, I activated my official key on Steam and then purchased Odyssey there. That is probably your best bet. When you install the game on Steam, just log into the launcher using your existing Frontier account details and you won't lose anything in the transfer.

Hope this helps!

Oooh the price is right on key sites now….. shame they’re steam keys and I have frontier accounts…

Ps. Odyssey is a definitely recommended at that price just for the horizons QOL updates.

I buy from the more established sites regularly and haven’t had a problem yet as random data.

Which is why I buy from Steam. :)

Given how at least a few sites even make direct statements about having legitimate keys, you would guess that any publisher or developer would use these sites as demand tests during various stages of a games lifecycle. I bet some do. If they're sitting on no sales and a different price point gets snapped up they can plan from there.

My opinion is based on a 3khouerer though. For new players it could do more harm than good if the first impression isn't to what kids are expecting. That's why they pay the marketing guy who made the call to release ody last may the big bucks :)

They pretty much burned through the regulars on release. New players can see the results in the negative reviews. After nine updates, it's still a hot mess.

Yeah i had nine months off and just starting again so have plenty of bad software credit to burn. Depends on how you want to look at i guess. Nearly all of it is negative because it is negative, the only one that could work is Horizons content only using the odd client. If you can get over how un planet like landable planets look.

What im running into now, clocking up more non graphics debugging play sessions finally, is how futile fps stations are. Going with the cheapest possible option of random npcs in fixed locations was done already by an indie developer in 2012. Bless xrebirth. Because you don't want to use the mission board they're already a bit pointless, and when they're not convincing either it doesn't help. The only plausible thing to do is change ships roleplay wise using the npc.. not being able to get a drink at the bar... getting a drink at the bar would have made me do odysee content, not the other way around..

Anyway, no problems its all good. Many other games to play as well as elite. It better to focus on what works here because everything else is so far underground you can't see it anymore.

Thanks for your help all.

As there's no definitive if I can purchase it through CDKeys or Steam and use it with my Frontier purchased ED/EDH then I'll think I'll just stump up the extra cash, which will also help Frontier directly. I've not heard anything good about Odyssey yet only negative reviews and how much work frontier need to do. I hope my experience is different from the rest. In my favour is the fact that I don't have any expectations, as I really don't care too much about space legs or walking around my own ship or PVP. So it will just be an additional element of the game I could use from time to time.

But you have heard about the fundamental performance issues of the engine and the issues with the planetary tech, as well as AI issues? These are fundamental issues, present for everyone. I would not (and actually do not in fact) acknowledge FDev business practice by sending them money. If they go cheap (which they do), I would also go cheap and use the beste offer.

Edit:

It has to be noted, that Valve does not take any share, if you just redeem a key on Steam.

Broadly speaking, Odyssey has three sources of negative reviews.

1) It's Elite Dangerous, but on foot, which includes all the things people don't like about ED space gameplay. If you do like ED space gameplay and want more of the same but walking about for a bit of variety, that's probably not an issue.

2) The performance is terrible compared with Horizons - though has improved considerably since release. If you've got a relatively modern PC (at least the "recommended spec", ideally better) and are willing to accept sub-60 FPS in places with perhaps lower graphics settings than you'd like then it'll probably be "good enough".

3) For something that's taken four years to develop and sells for the price of a new game, it's pretty light on variety of content. It does provide a decent platform to develop further content on to, but most of that is at best "future plans". Just as the original game + Horizons were significantly improved by Beyond, so too does Odyssey need a fair bit more development and content.

So long as you either get lucky with or can brute-force your way through the performance issues, and you're not expecting too much from it, it is nevertheless good fun - and is, at least, heading in the right direction with the regular updates to it.
