Where to explore?

I have fitted a research Dolphin for long range exploration. The plan (which might take many months) is to first inspect the Colonia Bridge (as part of our contract) and then take the neutron highway to Beagle Point, as a rite of passage for the crew.

I am a bit at an impasse after that. Which area of the galaxy would it be best to explore? I can see the borders are very well explored already. Anyone recommends a particular galaxy region or are they all explored more or less evenly?

I really liked Izanami

Also.. BP is far out.. Just dont visit. There is nothing. The road over there is littered with discoveries. Only leftovers for you to find.

Check out @Orvidius' map of the estimated exploration saturation of the galaxy:
exploration-saturation-map.png

It's an estimate of how thoroughly explored the different parts of the galaxy are.

To find Unexplored systems, you need to avoid the red and white areas, and aim for the dark blue and black areas.

It is clear that, for sheer density of the Unknown, you want to head towards the Core. Everywhere in the Core except the regions within 100 LY around Colonia and Sag A* are essentially still virtually untouched.

Beagle Point is worth it for the look back at the galaxy and the distances you've traveled to get there, you can't get that sense of scale anywhere else in the galaxy. But you won't find many undiscovered systems in those sectors around Beagle. Once you've done BP, try the eastern regions of the galaxy, I think they're still the most unexplored.

Try Rackham or any other edge of the galaxy. I found the places high and low of the pancake to have a much more impressive view

Its not just about the view though, its the journey. If you want an impressive view of the galaxy, there's a video of a youtuber in a system thats about 12,000 lys above the galaxy (he was put there by a dev for a day). Its impressive, but there was no journey involved, it looks good, but that's not what something like a journey to BP is all about.

We can disagree on this for suer ;-)

If it is about the journey. Why does the destination matter? Find your own BP.

I don't need to find my own BP, I was quite impressed with the original one thanks. My first journey there (on DW1) was the one I remember the most for the reasons I've outlined, and its the one I got the most satisfaction from. To each there own I suppose :)

Yes, I had seen that and got the same idea of going back towards the center. I was just wondering if there were other areas that, for some reason (not sure which one), would be more interesting.

I want to visit as a rite of passage. Went to Sag A* and Colonia already but never tried to get there. It is just to tick the box :)

Thanks for the Izanami suggestion, why was special about it?

The map shows more or less the same density :-?

All regions are pretty heavily by traveled now. My suggestion is mainly based on that part of the galaxy having less major destination points in mind. The galactic "south" has the bubble, the west has Colonia and the north has Beagle Point. All have been heavily traveled focal points over the years. The east remains the last frontier from that perspective and in a loose kind of way. But to be honest, the best advice is the oldest, basically stay off the galactic plane and instead travel at least 250 light years above or below it, in any direction and you'll be in virgin territory in pretty much any region, anywhere in the galaxy except the 3 'bubbles' I mentioned.

Exploring is way more fun with other players,
Always plenty of expeditions being organised, have a look on EDSM

Izamani was the correct density. (not so crazy dense as the core) It seemed to have lots of life like NSPs and Bio's and many interesting nebula's from big to small (I found a undiscovered one even about a year ago) Many heavy stars/wws and elws. Also it seemed to me that not much was discovered

Ok, thanks!

True. But it is my Alt and I play it when I get the blues for exploring or tired of Bubble stuff. So, I think it is difficult to partake on it with other players when I might log in every couple weeks, max.

Is there a guide somewhere which lists the different characteristics of the various regions?

Like the abundance of peduncle trees in Drymans Point, and so forth?

This ^^
When i started exploring my goals were the normal spots, Beagle. Sag A, the 4 compass points etc, i found way better places on the way there.

Try flipping through the high sticker "sightseeing" and "wants to collect data" missions in the passenger lounge for some destination ideas, (even if you can't or don't take the mission). You will find unexplored things along the way or can branch out on your own ideas, during the long term voyage. to the region.

One thing to remember about humans is that we tend to think horizontally. As a result, the middle of the galaxy tends to see more exploration that the Highs and the Deeps.

With a lot of those places of high density, they got explored early on when there were more limits to what could be accomplished. When I was still active in the game, I had a Dolphin that could make roughly 45-50 LY without boosters, depending on what the current meta was. That will get you to a lot of places that "Golden Age" explorers struggled with.

If you are interested in the rare or the possibly untouched, my suggestion would be, Go Deep!
