Newcomer / Intro Where to Find Ship Modules?

I'm a little stumped as to how I'm supposed to find modules beyond visiting every system and station, hoping to find what I'm looking for.

Right now I'm weighing the prospects of either getting the Adder or the Hauler, as I finally have enough cash for either of them. But I can't seem to find anything beyond a Class 2 Cargo Rack, and for some reason certain internal compartments can fit Class 1 Cargo Racks and Shield Generators, but another which has a Class 2 Cargo Rack won't fit a Shield Generator.

Am I just destined to looking this stuff up online in 3rd party sites like the Wiki, or is there some way to figure it out in-game?

In 3300 the internet and bulletin boards as well as Ebay have been forbidden or forgotten for some reason. Just like in the 18th century in the future you have to go to the mall (station) and hope they have what you want because...reasons

Seriously, look at what EVE has for finding where things are...it works great
On the other hand EVE requires subscription so yeah I won t complain about it but if it was available it would be so great

No way to find specific items, but filter your Galaxy map to show hi tech systems will help. If you are after even more specialised kit, also use the population slider to show higher population systems

Just look for them .... it's not that hard

Industrial and High Tech systems are the best place to try your luck. Some think that higher population systems have more choice; I've found it random. My 'home world' is a high population high tech and I often go to much smaller systems shopping for upgrades.

The outfitting screen won't show modules that don't fit your current ship, so if you are still in the Sidewinder you won't see anything bigger than Class 2. Class 1 Shield Generators don't exist, I think you are seeing a Shield Cell Bank. You can't have more than one Shield Generator, that's why the outfitting shop won't replace the Cargo Rack with a Shield.

The best stocked stations are those in High Tech or Industrial with high populations. You can use the galaxy map to filter for these systems. Although class 3 or higher cargo racks are extremely common and available in most systems. You just can't see them yet. As already mentioned, outfitting will not show anything which won't fit in the module space you have, so if you are in a Sidewinder you won't see anything above class 2, or any weapons above class 1. As soon as you upgrade your ship you will see more.
